In a stark reminder of humanity’s capacity for heroism in the face of crises, numerous civilians rushed to the aid of passengers after a bus carrying individuals from at least eight nations plunged into the water off the E10 highway in Hadsel, Nordland, Norway, on the afternoon of the 2nd of December.
The bus, traveling on the E10 highway, careered off the road and into the nearby water around 1:30 PM. Quick-thinking locals wasted no time, immediately contacting emergency services and rushing to the scene to assist. "They were at the scene long before the emergency services arrived," commended Lars Nedrevåg, head of the Hovedredningssentralen (HRS) North-Norway, to VG. "They did an immense and incredibly important job."
The civilians’ swift actions led to a significant rescue effort, enabling them to access the partially submerged bus, break windows, and help passengers to safety. While three individuals have been confirmed dead and four are severely injured, the bravery of these civilians has been widely praised. "We salute the efforts made by these civilians," Nedrevåg added.
International Impact
The bus was transporting passengers from a diverse range of nations, including China, Singapore, India, Malaysia, the Netherlands, South Sudan, and France, in addition to Norway. Bent Are Eilertsen, chief superintendent of Nordland Police, confirmed that around 20 of the 58 passengers were Chinese nationals, with the Chinese Embassy reporting no fatalities among the Chinese passengers.
A designated phone line for next-of-kin has been established by the police, with multilingual support available. The local Melbu Church has also opened its doors to offer a space for quiet reflection and support for those affected.
Emergency Response
The severity of the incident has led to a catastrophic alert at Nordland Hospital, which has deployed additional resources and established a crisis center. Wågan Municipality has set up a reception center at Thon Hotel in Svolvær for families and loved ones. Vågan’s mayor, Vidar Thom Benjaminsen, described the event as shocking but emphasized the municipality’s commitment to assisting those affected.
