One of the residents rescued at the Hamrikheem shelter shared how the evacuation unfolded. “I woke up quite late, and then the firefighters were knocking on my door,” said the man, who wished to remain anonymous. “When the door opened, I saw smoke and was given a mask. I had to put on clothes and run downstairs.”
Residents Evacuated After Fire on Ninth Floor: ‘I Had to Put on Clothes and Run Downstairs’
The residents of a high-rise apartment building were abruptly awoken and forced to evacuate early in the morning today due to a fire that broke out on the ninth floor. The blaze was reported around 2:30 AM, sending occupants rushing out into the chilly night, barely having time to grab essentials.
The fire, which started in a ninth-floor apartment, filled the building’s hallways with thick smoke, triggering the central fire alarm system. Residents immediately started evacuating, many still groggy from sleep.
"I was dead asleep when the fire alarm went off," said Maria, a second-floor resident. "I had to quickly put on some clothes and rush downstairs. It was quite scary."
The evacuation went smoothly, with residents following safety protocols and making their way down the stairwells to the building’s lobby. Fire fighters arrived promptly and quickly tackled the blaze, containing it to the apartment of origin.
"I saw firefighters rushing in with all their gear," said John, a fifth-floor resident. "It was quite a sight."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials suspect it may have started due to an overheated kitchen appliance. The displaced residents, around 200 in total, are being housed in temporary accommodations while the building is inspected for safety.
The building’s management has promised to help residents with any temporary relocation costs and to ensure their apartments are safe before they are allowed to return. They expressed their gratitude to the emergency services for their quick response and professionalism.
"I’m just grateful we’re all out and safe," said Maria. "It could have been much worse."
The incident serves as a reminder for all residents to be prepared and stay calm in case of emergencies, ensuring they follow safety procedures to protect themselves and others.
