Title:Ribnovo Kicks Off Wedding Season: The Enchanting ‘Gelina‘ Tradition
The quaint Bulgarian village of Ribnovo has once again opened its arms to celebrate the beloved ‘Gelina’ wedding tradition, drawing global attention to its centuries-old custom. The festive season, which lasts from December to February when field work is at its lull and migrant workers return home, is set to be more vibrant than ever, with nine weddings planned for this winter.
The bride, affectionately known as ‘gelina’, is a canvas of beauty, her face painted with a thick layer of white cream adorned with beautifully crafted flower motifs. This centuries-old ritual, unique to Ribnovo, has been inducted into Bulgaria‘s ‘Live Human Treasures’ system and is currently bidding for UNESCO recognition.
The festivities began on December 27 with the wedding of Selve Kiseleva and Kydri Pitarev. Hundreds of guests filled the town square for the ‘Kna’ ceremony, where lovely maidens, clad in identical attire, danced under flickering torches, surrounding the couple. The evening ended with everyone joining in a lively dance, a cherished moment captured by long-time local educator and tradition enthusiast Ibrahim Kydriyev, who has been documenting and promoting these events on social media.
Today and Sunday are filled with music and dance on the town square. Tomorrow, ‘gelina’ Selve can be seen at her family home, where the ‘cheisa’ (bride’s ransom) will take place. Here, she’ll dance with her female relatives and friends, before heading home with her new husband in a jubilant procession.
In a world increasingly dominated by logistics and pragmatism, Ribnovo’s ‘Gelina’ tradition stands out as a beacon of culture and heritage. With its finely crafted mud houses, vivid traditions, and warm-hearted people, the village offers a mesmerizing sneak peek into Bulgaria’s rich historical tapestry.
