Rijkswaterstaat Deploying Snow Plows as Freezing Conditions Loom

As the Netherlands braces for icy weather, Rijkswaterstaat, the executive management of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, has dispatched its snow-clearing fleet to ensure safety on the roads. Local media outlets, including NU.nl and Omroep Brabant, report that the organization’s snow plows and gritting vehicles are once again in action.

"We are closely monitoring weather forecasts and will keep our fleet on stand-by to immediately address any snow or ice formations," a Rijkswaterstaat spokesperson stated. The organization has a total of 117 snow-clearing vehicles across the country, ready to tackle the challenges that come with freezing temperatures.

Recently, slick roads have led to several accidents, underscoring the importance of Rijkswaterstaat’s proactive measures. In Leeuwarden, a car veered off the road in the Wâldwei area due to slippery conditions, while another vehicle caught fire following an accident, as reported by Omrop Fryslân. Similar incidents of vehicles losing control on ice-covered roads have been reported across the country, such as in Zwolle, where a car slid off the road and landed in a ditch.

Municipalities are also gearing up for the winter weather. Omroep Brabant reports that ‘s-Hertogenbosch has stockpiled salt, and local authorities are advising residents to be cautious on the roads and, if possible, postpone non-essential travel.

Drivers are urged to adapt their behavior to the road conditions, keeping a safe following distance and reducing speed. Rijkswaterstaat and local authorities are working seamlessly to ensure the safety of road users during this potentially hazardous period.

As the first snowflakes start to fall, all eyes are on the weather forecasts, and preparations are well underway to keep the Netherlands moving safely this winter.
