Breaking News: Violent Prison Riot in Mozambique Leaves 33 Dead, Over 1500 Escape

Maputo, Mozambique – A chaotic prison riot in Mozambique’s capital has resulted in the deaths of at least 33 people and the escape of over 1500 inmates. The riot, which took place in a prison in Maputo, saw inmates overpower prison guards and secure firearms, as reported by SABC News. Authorities have successfully recaptured approximately 150 escapees, but the remainder are still at large.

The riot follows a period of political tension in Mozambique, with ongoing disagreements surrounding the results of the October 9 presidential election. The ruling party, Frelimo, claims 70% of the vote, but opposition parties allege electoral fraud. International observers have also noted irregularities in the election process.

The election’s aftermath has been marked by street protests and violence, with at least 150 people, including 21 killed in recent demonstrations, losing their lives since the poll. Opposition leader and presidential candidate, Venancio Mondlane, has been encouraging supporters to take to the streets, further fueling the unrest.

The unrest has moved swiftly across borders, with neighboring countries expressing concern and temporarily closing some borders as a precautionary measure.
