Fadli Zon Urges Cultural Engagment and Freedom of Expression
In a forthright address, renowned historians and cultural expert, Dr. Fadli Zon, has called for active engagement from academicians and the arts community. Speaking at the Museum Nasional, Zon emphasized the dire need for dialogue and understanding in navigating cultural landscapes. The 65-year-old, often known for his forthright stance and engaging debates, said, "I hope for Pak Fadli Zon to join our academic and arts communities, sharing his profound understanding of (cultural) matters."
Zon’s impassioned plea came as a stark criticism of the current approach by the Ministry of Culture. "If we rely solely on bureaucratic criteria to judge cultural events," Zon warned, "we risk falling behind culturally, losing our voice, and stifling our imagination."
His comments coincide with recent controversy surrounding the abrupt cancellation of Yos Suprapto‘s solo exhibition at the Galeri Nasional. Despite initial reports of a "ban," Zon refuted such claims, stating, "There was no censorship. The decision lies with the curator, with our support. I only learned of this recently."
Titled "Indonesia: The Oldest Civilization on Earth?: 130 Years After Pithecanthropus Erectus," the exhibition opened on Friday, December 21, 2024, at the Museum Nasional, a day after the planned Galeri Nasional event.
Zon’s call to action serves as a timely reminder of the delicate balance between cultural preservation and creative freedom. As Indonesia continues to celebrate its rich history, it is crucial to also nurture the voices that keep its cultural conversation dynamic and diverse.
