Rumänien Planning 200km Highway Expansion by 2025, Launches Major Focsani-Braila Project
Prime Minister Marcel Cholaku of Romania has announced plans to expand the country’s highway network by over 200 kilometers by 2025, according to Adjarpresse, cited by BTA.
"This year, we’re starting like we ended last year in road infrastructure – with the tempo of 2024," Cholaku said at the start of today’s government meeting, referring to the first tenders for the Focsani-Braila Expressway project. valued at over a billion euros. "This is a vital project connecting the Moldava Motorway with the suspended bridge over the Danube (in Braila), and ensuring a connection between Tulcea and Constanta counties."
Cholaku added that the government’s goal for the year is to complete all major road projects currently underway and open over 200 kilometers of roads within a year.
The National Company for Investment in Road Infrastructure has announced on its Facebook page that Romanian, Bulgarian, and Italian consortia and companies have submitted five bids for the tender to design and build the Focsani-Braila Expressway. The Bulgarian company "Trace Group Holding" is among the bidders.
The contract for this European-funded investment is worth 5.3 billion lei (approximately 1.06 billion euros). The implementation period is 42 months, of which six months are allocated for design and 36 months for the construction phase.
The 73-kilometer Focsani-Braila Expressway is the longest expressway to be built under a single contract in Romania, according to Adjarpresse.
In 2024, Romania opened nearly 200 kilometers of motorways and expressways, including over 100 kilometers of the Moldava Motorway (A7), which connects northern and southern Romania, local media reported at the end of the year. Romania’s network of expressways now spans over 1,280 kilometers, the Romanian Radio Free Europe (RFE) reported.
