According to the NUPI researcher, this diplomatic estrangement extends far beyond the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Cut off from Western markets and institutions, Moscow has actively forged alternative economic and security partnerships.

Deepening Security Ties Among Isolated States

While China remains Russia’s primary economic partner in this realignment, security cooperation has broadened to include countries like North Korea and Iran, according to Wilhelmsen’s analysis. Monday’s opening ceremony coincided with a dramatic overall strengthening of military and economic coordination between Moscow and Pyongyang.

“The world is steadily becoming a more dangerous place, at least regarding the relationship between Russia and NATO countries, where they speak with weapons instead of words,” Wilhelmsen stated.
