Headline: Russian Drones Strike Ukraine‘s Parliament Building in New Year Attack
In the early hours of January 1, Russian drones targeted the heart of Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, causing damage to the administrative building of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine’s parliament) on Bankova Street. The attack was confirmed by the parliament’s chairman, Ruslan Stefanchuk, via his Facebook page on January 2.
Stefanchuk reported that the attack, involving Russian unmanned aerial vehicles, had resulted in damage to the parliamentary building, located just 100 meters from the Presidential Office of Ukraine. The blast wave also affected surrounding buildings, including residential properties near the government quarter on Bankova Street.
The parliamentary head shared images depicting shattered windows at the parliamentary administrative building at Bankova Street, 6-8. Tragically, the incident claimed the lives of renowned Ukrainian biologists Igor Zima and his wife Olesia Sokur.
Earlier reports had indicated that debris from the drones had fallen on residential buildings near the government quarter, with the Presidential Office and the National Bank of Ukraine also in close proximity to the impact zone.
This latest attack adds to the string of Russian drone strikes targeting Ukrainian infrastructure and civil areas, adding a grim note to the New Year. As the war in Ukraine continues, so does the international community’s calls for an end to such aggressive actions and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
