Ministry of Defense Announces Comprehensive Review of Ground Forces Command

The Ministry of Defense’s Main Inspectorate will conduct a thorough analysis of the command structure of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov has announced. This decision follows a commitment to strengthen the armed forces and ensure their effectiveness in the ongoing conflict.

In a statement, Umerov emphasized the strategic importance of the Ground Forces, noting that their performance directly impacts the frontline situation. He endorsed the appointment of General-Major Mikhail Drapaty as the new commander of the Ground Forces and highlighted the need for an in-depth assessment of the forces’ current state.

The comprehensive review will evaluate the organizational structure and authorities, the efficiency of management processes, and compliance with legal regulations. Umerov also noted that the results of this inspection will inform reforms in the Ground Forces’ management system and personnel policy, aiming to optimize processes and bolster combat capabilities through innovative training approaches.

Recent Controversies in the Ground Forces

Previously, media reports revealed systemic mistreatment of soldiers in the 211th pontoon-bridge brigade of the Armed Forces’ Support Forces. Established in 2022, the brigade initially consisted of individuals connected through long-standing professional, personal, or familial ties. Commander Oleg Pober Autobahn, whose wife worked at the Central Recruiting Center, was accused of appointing relatives and acquaintances to the brigade.

On December 30, Pober Autobahn was sent to a detention center, pending a trial. Prosecutors had requested a bail of 40 million hryvnia, but the court set it at 12 million hryvnia, allowing the officer’s potential release. The court also received a motion to suspend the suspect from duty.

This announcement signals the Ministry of Defense’s commitment to transparency and accountability within the Ukrainian military, aiming to ensure the highest standards of professionalism and effectiveness.
