Title: Russian Embassy in Argentina Condemns Detention of Diplomats
In an unprecedented move, the Russian Embassy in Argentina has expressed outrage over the detention of two of its diplomats who refused to take an alcohol test. The incident, which occurred on December 25, 2024, has been denounced by the Embassy as a grave violation of international law and diplomatic immunity.
Alexander, the first secretary of the Russian Embassy, issued a statement to the press, stressing that "according to the Vienna Convention, diplomats cannot be subjected to any stops, searches, and we consider what happened today as a grave violation of international law."
The incident involved two Russian diplomats who were pulled over in Buenos Aires. One of the diplomats, later identified as Cardmath Solomatin, codirector of the Casa de Rusia in Buenos Aires, passed through the control of Avenida Libertador and Avenida Callao, refusing to blow into the alcohol detector. Another man, before him, had also refused and was taken to the Russian Embassy.
The Ministry of Security, in conjunction with the Argentine Foreign Ministry, deployed its Security Diplomatic Police to ensure compliance with the Vienna Convention and the laws governing diplomatic relations.
The detained diplomats, identified as Sergei Baldin and Cardmath Solomatin, were eventually escorted to the Embassy of the Russian Federation. Baldin had initially refused to take an alcohol test and was later seen barricading himself in his car before being taken to the Embassy.
The Russian Embassy maintains that such actions against its diplomats are unacceptable and has urged Argentine authorities to respect the Vienna Convention and ensure the safety and well-being of diplomatic personnel.
