Tragic Incident in Surabaya: Toddler Drowned in Overflowing Drain During Heavy Rain
A torrential downpour in Surabaya, East Java, on Tuesday evening (24/12/2024) claimed a life. A 3.5-year-old boy named Rizky, from Babatan Gang II F Wiyung, was swept away and drowned in a swollen drain near his home.
Security footage showed Rizky playing in the rain with three friends without adult supervision. They were seen approaching the drain, which was overflowing due to heavy rain. Without warning, Rizky approached the drain, slipped, and fell in. His small body was quickly carried away by the strong current.
Witnesses and local residents were shocked by the incident, which was quickly captured on CCTV and shared on social media. "We heard the children playing in the rain, but we never thought this would happen," said a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous.
Rizky’s parents were devastated by the news. "I only turned my back for a moment to prepare food," said his mother, whose identity is still being protected by local authorities.
This incident serves as a reminder for parents to always supervise their children, especially during heavy rain when drains may overflow. Local authorities have also urged residents to be cautious and stay away from drains during heavy rainfall.
The Surabaya Police and local Disaster Mitigation Agency are currently investigating the incident. They have promised to take necessary measures to prevent future tragedies.
