Ukrainian Ombudsman Accuses Russian Soldiers of Executing Five Captured Ukrainian Troops
In a shocking allegation, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, has claimed that Russian soldiers have executed five Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs). Lubinets made this assertion on Sunday, December 22.
According to Lubinets, the video footage of the execution was shared by the 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade (OMB) named after General Markov Bezruchko, a tactical unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. Lubinets stated that the video appears to show Russian troops shooting captured Ukrainian soldiers.
"We have evidence of the probablesummary execution of captured Ukrainian troops by Russian war criminals," Lubinets stated. "Those responsible for these atrocities must face an international tribunal and receive the harshest punishment allowed by law."
Lubinets vowed to notify the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross about the incident.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s prosecutor general’s office has initiated a pre-trial investigation into the shooting deaths of four Ukrainian POWs in the Donetsk region. The case revolves around suspected war crimes resulting in death. Initial investigations suggest that the incident occurred in the Volnovakha district, with the Ukrainian soldiers being force to surrender before being executed in violation of the Geneva Conventions.
Russian Ministry of Defense has yet to comment on these allegations. Recent months, particularly since October, have seen an increase in reports of such incidents, with analysts suggesting a hardening stance by Russian forces towards Ukrainian POWs and civilians. However, DW cautions that in the chaos of war, it’s challenging to independently verify information from both sides involved.
