Flight Restrictions Lifted at Four Russian Airports
MOSCOW — Russia has lifted restrictions on flights at four of its airports, according to a report by Finance embracing initializing code (Finance Online). The move comes after weeks of disruptions caused by a drones incident near Moscow and maintenance work at Sheremetyevo International Airport.
The airports where flight restrictions have been lifted are Sheremetyevo (SVO), Domodedovo (DME), Vnukovo (VKO), and Zhukovsky (ZIA), the Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsiya confirmed on Wednesday. These airports serve the majority of international and domestic flights in and out of Moscow.
"The situation at the airports has stabilized, and we believe it’s safe to resume normal operations," a Rosaviatsiya spokesperson said in a statement.
Last month, thousands of flights were delayed or canceled following a drone incursion near SVO, which led to temporary closures and restrictions on takeoffs and landings. Additionally, maintenance work at SVO’s runway B and taxiway C resulted in further disruptions.
Airline officials and passengers alike have welcomed the lifting of restrictions, expressing relief at the return to normality ahead of the summer travel season. Statistics show that over 150,000 passengers were affected by the flight disruptions in May alone.
Unveiling the full extent of the disruptions, Finance Online reported that around 3,000 flights were delayed or canceled across the four Moscow airports during the restrictions. This has placed a significant strain on airlines and passengers, with many having to rebook flights or seek alternative transportation.
As the Russian aviation sector moves towards a post-restriction era, industry experts are strategizing ways to mitigate such disruptions in the future. Improving airport infrastructure, enhancing drone detection and prevention systems, and streamlining maintenance procedures are among the top priorities.
