Ukrainian Front Update: Key Developments from December 30, 2024 to January 5, 2025
As the new year begins, let’s explore the latest developments on the Ukrainian front, based on data from DeepStateMAP.
Kursk Region: Russian hopes dashed
Calling the situation in Kursk "good news" for Russia, Ukrainian officials hinted that the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) were making progress. However, based on DeepState’s observations, no significant changes in the contact line have been reported since the beginning of the week.

‘impactful advances’ made from the town of Sudzha towards Très-Haut-Sol lift. AFU forces also seemed to have success in areas around Leonidovka and Pushkarnoe.
Nevertheless, DeepState mentions that Russian troops are attacking Malaya Loknya, Sverdliovo, and Leonidovka simultaneously, making it difficult to gauge gains. More information on the situation is expected as the official word comes in.
Pokrovsk and Novovasillyvka: A neck-and-neck struggle
On the Pokrovsk axis, Russian forces continued pushing towards the city, now less than 2.5 km away. Intense fighting raged on in Novovasillyvka, with Russian troops attacking in multiple sectors. Meanwhile, Russian troops advanced near Uspenovka, Solenoye, Novyelizavetovka, and Voznesenka.
Kurakhove and its surroundings: Back and forth
In the Kurakhove region, the situation remained volatile. Ukrainian forces reportedly retreated from certain positions, with the Russian Ministry of Defense claiming to have taken full control of Kurakhove. However, the Operational Command South ("Hortitsa") refuted these claims, stating that fighting continued within the city.
Russian troops attempted to seize Yantarne, shooting from Konstantinopolskoye and Sukhiye Yalov. Despite their efforts, the attack did not succeed, and Russian forces consolidated their positions in the village.
Torez: Chaotic clashes
In Torez, fierce fighting continued, with deep pockets of resistance remaining in the city center and the Zabolka microdistrict. While Russian troops attacked Shcherbinovka, they were ultimately repelled. Russia’s successful advances within the city were confirmed.
Platone on the Limansky axis: An ongoing campaign
On the Limansky axis, Russian forces continued to build up forces in the village of Ivanovka, aiming to capture key heights near the village. While Russian troops met with success in Ivanovka, they suffered setbacks near Terny.
Cupped islands in Kherson: Russia persists
In the Kherson region, the Russian forces maintained their attempts to seize the right bank of the Dnieper. Despite their efforts, the Ukrainian forces successfully repelled Russian attacks on Kazatsky, Zabychye, and Bolshoy Potemkinsky islands.
