A 90-pound golden retriever in Sherman Heights greeted a home intruder earlier this month by repeatedly offering a toy instead of barking, according to local police and family accounts. Homeowner Dante Rowley watched the half-hour break-in via a security app while the suspect snacked on fridge items and took a nap.
Security Cameras Capture an Unconventional Break-In in Sherman Heights
When a stranger climbed a ladder to reach an open second-story window in a Sherman Heights neighborhood just east of downtown San Diego, near the corner of 20th and J streets, the home’s canine residents reacted in a manner entirely contrary to traditional guard dog instincts. Homeowner Dante Rowley and his family monitored the entire sequence remotely through a six-camera security system and an app on their phones.
The San Diego Police Department launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred earlier this month. Once inside the residence, the intruder made himself remarkably comfortable during his roughly 30-minute stay. According to reporting from NBC 7 San Diego, the suspect removed his shoes and shirt, seated himself on a bench in the foyer, and helped himself to yogurt, turkey, and cheese from the family refrigerator before squeezing in a nap.
Nash the Golden Retriever Offers Toys Instead of Guarding
While two of Dante Rowley’s three dogs—including Oli, a long-haired Dachshund—were inside the house, attention quickly turned to Nash, a 4-year-old, 90-pound golden retriever. Rather than responding with defensive barking or growling, the large dog viewed the intruder as a potential playmate.
Security footage documented the canine’s friendly persistence. Not once, or twice but three times, Nash brought the intruder a toy so they could play, trotting over repeatedly with a toy in his mouth. Rowley noted that the dog is more cuddlier than killer, simply wanting to stop the visitor for a belly rub or offer a toy rather than deter the trespasser.

Rowley spoke regarding the household pets. Despite the situation, Rowley noted that Nash is still in the doghouse for his behavior.
Police Arrive and Take the Suspect into Custody
The friendly reception extended beyond the intruder. When local law enforcement arrived at the property, Nash was not distracted by the drama and greeted the officers at the front door with his tail wagging and a toy still in his mouth, ready to welcome anyone who walked through the door.
The suspect’s attempt to flee through a first-floor bathroom window proved unsuccessful. Officers waited for him in the backyard, where they placed him under arrest, handcuffed him, and took him into custody on the spot. According to updates provided by Rowley, the intruder faces burglary charges alongside outstanding charges from unrelated incidents. We just hope he gets some help honestly,
