A high-ranking Saudi delegation, led by a Royal Court advisor, held talks with the newly appointed Syrian leadership, Ahmed al-Sheraf, at Damascus’ Palace of People on Sunday. This meeting comes amidst growing signs of a thaw in bilateral relations which have been strained for over a decade.
Al-Sheraf had previously expressed his desire to strengthen economic and developmental cooperation with Saudi Arabia in an interview with the Middle East newspaper, citing improved regional security prospects. His words echo the Kingdom’s long-standing commitment to Syria‘s territorial integrity and sovereignty, advocating for a homegrown solution to the country’s refugee status, ensuring the Syria’s people can determine their own future free from foreign meddling.
Since the onset of the Syrian crisis in 2011, Saudi Arabia has maintained a steadfast stance, advocating for the security and unity of Syria, while opposing external interventions. This latest diplomatic outreach is indicative of a potential shift in regional dynamics, with possibly far-reaching implications for the Middle East politics and economy.
