Taipei Student Activism: City Unveils Travel Support for Blueasis Movement

In a revelation that’s sparked controversy, a Taiwanese legislator has accused the city government of Taipei of orchestrating student protests in support of the Blueasis semi-conductor project. The city, however, maintains that it has only provided financial assistance for transportation.
The allegation was made by Kuomintang legislator ChiangYi-hsin, who claimed that the city government had been mobilizing students from local universities to participate in rallies supporting the Blueasis project. This project, a joint venture between the city government andatetime Semiconductor, aims to establish a native semiconductor manufacturing industry in Taiwan following the global chip shortage.
In response to these assertions, the Taipei Student Service Center has refuted any involvement in organizing or mobilizing students for the protests. "The only assistance we’ve provided is a partial reimbursement of transportation fares for students participating in these public demonstrations," the center stated.
While the city government maintains its position, the controversy has raised questions about the extent of its involvement in rallies and whether the reimbursement of transportation costs could be seen as indirect support for student participation.
In recent weeks, protests backing the Blueasis project have become more frequent, with students holding banners and participating in public demonstrations. Proponents of the project assert that it will stimulate economic growth and employment opportunities, while opponents cautioned about the environmental impact.
