Subhead:NIKITA VASYLENKO’S REMARKS SPARK OUTRAGE; UNIVERSITY INVESTIGATES

Article:

In a recent turn of events, a professor from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (KNU) has found himself at the center of a storm surrounding his controversial remarks about Ukrainian women. Professor Nikita Vasilenko, from the University’s Institute of Journalism, has sparked outrage after his comments about "hundreds of thousands of hungry Ukrainian women" went public.

Vasilenko, who initially made the remarks, perceived them as a literary expression. He stood by the essence of his words, however, stating in a comment to Suspilne, "But with the meaning, are you in agreement? Do you think I’m a sexist based on this publication, and I should be fired from the university?"

The professor’s remarks did not go unnoticed by the university authorities. KNU Rector, Vladimir Bugrov, has announced that a commission will review Professor Vasilenko’s behavior. If deemed inappropriate, Vasilenko could face his second disciplinary warning, potentially leading to dismissal. Alternatively, the Institute of Journalism’s academic council could decide to terminate his contract.

Vasilenko’s comments have also drawn criticism from prominent figures, including the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmitry Lubinets, and the Minister of Education and Science, Oksana Lytvynenko. They both expressed their disapproval of the professor’s remarks, which were seen as derogatory and demeaning towards Ukrainian women.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of combating sexism and misogyny in academic institutions. As the university investigates the matter, stakeholders await the final outcome, which could set a precedent for future cases. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
