A 30-year-old man who recently returned from West Africa has been confirmed as a new mpox case in Serbia, marking the first such case in the region of Kosovo. The Regional Institute of Public Health announced this on Friday, as reported by Xinhua via Agerpres.

The patient was hospitalized on December 24, presenting symptoms including fever, chills, and cutaneous lesions on the face and hands.currently in stable condition.

Serbian authorities have traced all close contacts of the patient and issued infection control recommendations to prevent potential further transmission of the virus, according to institute representatives.

Serbia had first confirmed an mpox case in June 2022. The World Health Organization continues to classify the mpox epidemic as a public health emergency of international concern.

In August, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) announced that Europe was likely to see more imported mpox cases but that the likelihood of sustained transmission of this disease in Europe remained very low.

According to ECDC’s latest surveillance and monitoring report, published this month, Germany reported a cluster of four mpox cases on December 15, while Belgium reported its first confirmed mpox case linked to clade Ib on December 18, in a person who had recently returned from one of the affected countries in Africa.

In light of the ongoing global mpox outbreak, health authorities worldwide continue to emphasize the importance of vigilance and effective public health measures to prevent and control the spread of the disease.
