Breaking: Finnish Police Identify Suspect in Estonia-Finland Submarine Cable Sabotage
In a significant development, Finnish police have identified a suspect vessel in the recent severing of the Estlink 2 submarine cable connecting Finland and Estonia. The incident, believed to be an act of sabotage, occurred last week.
The Eagle S, a ship registered under the flag of the Cook Islands, is now under investigation for reportedly dragging its anchor along the seafloor for miles, causing extensive damage to the cable. The vessel is currently detained in Finnish waters as the probe continues.
In remarks to the media, lead investigator Elina Katajamäkirów stressed the importance of travel restrictions for suspects, stating, "While a travel ban is a less restrictive measure than arrest, it’s vital to ensure that our investigation is not hindered, and all involved parties remain accessible."
In light of this incident, the European Union has threatened tougher action against ‘ghost ships’ – vessels presumed to be evading sanctions by ferrying goods to and from Russia.
