Title: Woman Burned Alive in NYC Subway: Brutal Murder and Immigration Debate Emerge After Debrina Kawam‘s Tragic Death
Article:
A gruesome murder in a New York City subway station has sparked outrage and reignited debates on immigration policies. Debrina Kawam, a 57-year-old woman from Toms River, New Jersey, was ignited on fire while she was apparently sleeping in a stalled train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn. The city was left shock by the brutal attack, which left Kawam unrecognizable due to her severe burns. Authorities identified her through dental records and DNA tests, initially misreporting her age as 61.
Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, a 33-year-old man from Guatemala who entered the US illegally, stands accused. On December 22, around 7:30 AM, Zapeta allegedly poured an ignitable liquid on Kawam and set her ablaze. Surveillance footage captured the horrific scene, showing Kawam trying to cling onto the train door while engulfed in flames. Zapeta, who sat on a nearby bench, used his shirt to fan the flames instead of assisting her.
Zapeta, who was deported in 2018 but re-entered the US, faces charges of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, arson, and criminal use of a firearm. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric González expressed confidence in the case’s strength, stating, "The evidence pointing to Zapeta’s guilt is overwhelming."
The incident, which was captured by multiple security cameras and witnessed by bystanders, has also raised concerns about immigration policies. New York City Mayor Eric Adams called for federal charges against Zapeta, with his office stating, "There is no place in our city for such depravity."
Despite being detained at Rikers Island, Zapeta has yet to formally enter a plea. In an attempt to justify his actions, he reportedly told investigators that he had consumed too much alcohol and couldn’t recall what had happened. Zapeta is set to be formally indicted on January 7.
first responders found Kawam’s burning body after noticing the smoke while patrolling above the station. Although they extinguished the flames, they did not initially recognize Zapeta, who was sitting nearby. However, body cam footage helped identify him later.
The tragedy has sparked a heated debate about immigration policies and their enforcement. Kawam’s senseless murder has been described as "grotesque" and "without reason" by authorities and media outlets. As the judicial process unfolds, so too does the public’s outcry for justice and change.
