Slothrust will release their upcoming album, What They Grow in the Garden, on September 18 through Equal Vision Records, according to an announcement from the band. The Los Angeles-based alternative rock group co-produced the 12-track project with Jordan Witzigreuter (The Ready Set), aiming for harder-hitting riffs, catchier hooks, and a style they describe as “dystopian theatre rock.” Alongside the album announcement, the band released two lead singles, “Ring the Bell” and “00101001,” which are currently available to stream.
Themes and Musical Direction of What They Grow in the Garden
The lyrics on What They Grow in the Garden examine the hive mind and explore the human experience within a capitalist system designed to exploit perceived weaknesses, according to a press release from the band. Band members Leah Wellbaum and Will Gorin stated that the project aims to deliver a message of self-liberation amidst inescapable dread. They explained that despite the permeating blue light of the external world, finding freedom and core truths remains possible by looking inward. The lead singles “Ring the Bell” and “00101001” encapsulate these themes, combining Wellbaum’s soaring vocals with bombastic guitar riffs and Gorin’s pounding drums.
