Snapchat Celebrity Fined Over $27,000 for Repeatedly Posting Illegal Ads in Saudi Arabia
In a significant move, Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Media Regulation (GAM) has fined a popular Snapchat celebrity one million Saudi Riyal (approximately $27,000 USD) for repeatedly posting illegal advertisements. Alongside the hefty fine, the agency also suspended the celebrity’s media license for a month.
The violation occurred when the celebrity promoted real estate social events and invitations that contained illegal advertisement content. The posts violated the Audio-visual Media Law’s ninth and thirteenth articles, which prohibit the dissemination of false information and the use of indecent language in advertisements, respectively.
According to the GAM, the celebrity’s media license was suspended for a month for non-compliance with the regulations. The celebrity, who was not named, reportedly attracted sanctions due to continuous offenses.
This incident serves as a stern reminder for influencers and celebrities in Saudi Arabia to adhere to the country’s media guidelines, especially concerning advertising content. Failing to comply with these regulations can result in severe penalties, including license suspension and hefty fines. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, it is crucial for media personalities to stay updated with the latest regulations and guidelines to avoid such sanctionable offenses.
