Winter Makes a Comeback: Mediterranean Cyclone Bring Rain and Snow at Week’s End

Bulgaria is currently experiencing a pronounced warming trend in the second week of January, with daytime temperatures set to rise. Although Monday will start off cold, temperatures will climb to between 8 and 13°C, and will surpass 15°C in northern and some eastern regions from Tuesday to Friday.

visibility conditions are expected to be reduced during the early morning hours each day, particularly in lowlands and near water bodies. Persistent fog, especially in basins and valleys, may lead to the accumulation of air pollutants. The cloud cover will be dynamic, with increased density on Tuesday and predominantly sunny skies for the rest of the week.

A Mediterranean cyclone is set to usher in winter weather once again by the end of the week. Rainfall is expected to begin in western regions on Friday afternoon, transitioning to snow as temperatures drop. On Saturday, snowfall is predicted for northern and western areas, while rain will fall in southeast regions and along the coast.

This cyclone will also bring a significant chunk of cold air from the north, lowering temperatures back to winter levels. Daytime temperatures on Saturday and Sunday are expected to range between 0 and 5°C, with early morning temperatures on January 12 and 13 dropping to -7 to -8°C in some areas.

The clear skies expected around the Epiphany celebrations in Southwest Bulgaria (January 13-14) will be followed by a return of snow in isolated points of West and Central Bulgaria. Daytime temperatures will start to rise, reaching between 8 and 13°C by January 16-17.

Weather forecasts suggest that another storm system, this time another Mediterranean cyclone, could impact the region around January 17-18, bringing rain and snow once again.
