Winter Storm Warning Issued for Dallas-Fort Worth: What to Expect

A winter storm warning is in effect for Dallas and Fort Worth, along with several other cities in Texas, as the region braces for its first snowfall of 2025. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued the alert until Friday at 6 p.m., covering parts of North, Central, and Northeastern Texas.

When Will It Snow?

For parts of North Texas, along and north of Interstate 20, "three to six inches of snow are possible Thursday," the NWS alert states. "Farther south, lighter amounts of snow, sleet, and some ice are possible." Snowfall is expected between Thursday and Friday in the DFW area.

Cold Temperatures and Winter Weather Conditions

Miserable winter weather arrived in North Texas on Monday and will persist throughout the week. Conditions will deteriorate towards the end of the workweek, with snow and temperatures dropping below freezing. The wind chill will range between 15 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit (around -9 to -4°C) throughout the week. On Wednesday, January 8, the thermometer reached 28°F (-2°C).

Wednesday’s Weather Forecast

Dallas-Fort Worth will experience dry, cold weather on Wednesday, January 8, according to the Fort Worth office of the National Weather Service. Meteorologists predict that temperatures will reach a high of 40°F (4°C) with partially sunny skies.

However, it’s the late-week forecast that has many North Texas residents on edge.

Snow Expected from Thursday Morning

Dallas-Fort Worth could start seeing measurable snow after midnight on Wednesday, according to meteorologists. The NWS said that the rain and snow mix "will decrease Friday morning, but hazardous travel conditions will persist throughout much of the region." Snowfall is expected to end Friday afternoon, but the storm’s impact will continue to affect the region Saturday morning, with temperatures remaining below freezing overnight.

ERCOT Issues Weather Alert

ERCOT, the electric grid operator for most of Texas, issued a weather alert on Sunday night, warning customers about increased electricity demand and the possibility of lower reserves due to cold weather.

Temporary Shelter Open

The City of Dallas has opened a temporary shelter within Fair Park to provide food and temporary accommodation to those without suitable conditions to withstand the cold temperatures during this extreme winter weather event in North Texas.
