Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico has announced that he has secured necessary gas supplies for Slovakia following a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. The assurance comes amidst concerns over Ukraine’s decision to halt Russian gas transit to Europe, including Slovakia, from the start of 2024.
Fico, who met Putin in the Kremlin on December 22, provided details about the meeting through a Facebook video uploaded post-Kremlin visit. He stated, "It was crucial to ensure gas supply at least for our domestic consumption in Slovakia," reaffirming that the supplies would be provided without any price hikes.
This move by Fico comes as a proactive measure before Ukraine’s announced halt on gas transit from Russia, a significant step considering 75% of Russian gas exports to Europe pass through Ukraine. Slovakia, itself a major transit country, relies heavily on Russian gas supplies.
Despite the assurance, Fico did not delve into further details regarding the specifics of the agreements made.
