A Dutch military personnel has been sentenced to six months in prison for, among other charges, selling illegal fireworks on a military base, according to a report by NU.nl.
The defendant, a 30-year-old sergeant, admitted to selling fireworks and other prohibited items such as pepper spray and lighters to fellow soldiers between 2018 and 2020. The sergeant was charged with violating regulations regarding the supply and use of explosives, as well as other military discipline offenses.
The court found the sergeant’s actions to be serious and deliberate, warranting a stiff penalty. During the trial, it was revealed that the sergeant had even sold fireworks during a state of crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating a clear disregard for regulations and public safety.
The sentence includes a three-month conditional prison term and the sergeant has been dismissed from the military. Moreover, he will have to pay a €1,200 fine, and any future employers seeking information about him from the military police will receive a negative reference.
