Post-Pandemic Respiratory Viruses: From Mild to Severe, Doctors Brace for Winter Surge

Article:

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals across Romania are grappling with an alarming diversity of respiratory viruses, ranging from mild symptoms to severe cases, with the number of infections rising significantly. As the winter season sets in, the healthcare system braces for a substantial influx of patients.

Dr. Cristian Pandrea, coordinator of the Emergency Department at Spitalul Clinic SANADOR, emphasizes that the forms of influenza are becoming increasingly varied, from minor symptoms to severe afflictions. Intensive diagnostics have led to a surge in detected cases.

"The clinical forms of influenza are becoming increasingly varied, from very little to very severe. In this period, we see not only people with the flu, but also a significant number with aggravated conditions, especially as we’re diagnosing more intensively," says Dr. Pandrea.

He adds, "There are still some cases of respiratory infections, COVID-19, unrelated to previous infections. There’s a multiplicity of viruses causing respiratory illnesses, which we highlight in our laboratory tests. It’s a diversification post-pandemic."

With the increasing number of respiratory virus cases, patients from all age groups are presenting at emergency rooms. It’s crucial to be vigilant about the first signs of respiratory illnesses, especially for those in high-risk groups who should be constantly monitored.

Dr. Pandrea advises, "It’s still a matter of extreme ages and chronic diseases. In such cases, it would be wise to consult an emergency service or your family doctor, as the situation can deteriorate quickly. The idea is to see your regular doctor."

To prevent complications and ease the burden on hospitals, healthcare authorities recommend annual anti-flu vaccinations, especially for at-risk individuals. Practicing good hygiene and social distancing, when necessary, can also help curb the spread of viral infections.
