Title: First South American Nurses Arrive at Menaggio Hospital
In a bid to shore up staff shortages, Menaggio Hospital is set to welcome its first group of South American nurses in early January. A dozen healthcare professionals from countries like Argentina and Paraguay will start their service at the Erba Rinaldi hospital, taking up residence in spaces previously occupied by mental health services.
The arrival of these nurses, while not yet officially confirmed, has been anticipated within hospital circles following attempts by the local healthcare authority, Asst Lariana, to recruit staff from abroad. This move echoes an earlier announcement by the Lombardy region‘s welfare assessor, Guido Bertolaso, who revealed plans to form and recruit nursing staff from South American countries, initially targeting around 400 to 500 nurses for understaffed facilities.
Menaggio Hospital, facing significant staffing challenges, has struggled to attract nurses despite recent efforts. A recent job posting for nurses on the Lake Como area yielded only six applicants. As the hospital aims to expand chronic care services, attracting and retaining medical and nursing staff will be pivotal.
To accommodate the new nurses, the hospital plans to offer them accommodations in the recently renovated space formerly occupied by the psychiatric unit. This approach could be replicated in the city of Como, where a former student residence on Via Napoleona is being considered for this purpose.
Importing healthcare workers from abroad is seen as a viable option to address the nationwide shortage of nurses and doctors, particularly in specialties like orthopedics, which faced critical staffing issues at Menaggio Hospital last year. The situation was exacerbated by the inability to renew contracts with external cooperatives that provided rotation-based doctors on a high-cost basis. Adding to the staffing pressures, two dermatologists recently resigned, leaving the hospital without immediate replacements.
While the arrival of South American nurses is expected to bolster staffing levels at Menaggio Hospital, it remains unclear whether the facility will retain its emergency services and orthopedic departments, which have been left without specialist staff.
Last year, nearby Valduce Hospital also attempted to recruit nurses from South American countries like Peru and Colombia. Some were later integrated into the hospital’s permanent staff, while others found it challenging to secure affordable housing in the area and returned home. Similarly, some local nursing homes, such as the Giuseppine in Como, have successfully integrated South American healthcare workers into their teams, while recruitment from countries like India has proven more challenging due to cultural and linguistic barriers.
As Menaggio Hospital awaits further clarification on the fate of its emergency and orthopedic departments, the imminent arrival of South American nurses offers a glimmer of hope in addressing its persistent staffing struggles.
