Breaking: Kiril Petkov, Co-Chair of "Continue the Change," Summoned by Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office
Kiril Petkov, the co-chair of the political party "Continue the Change," has been summoned to the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office, where he is expected to face charges. According to information circulating in the public social media groups of the party’s supporters, they are preparing to rally in solidarity with Petkov in front of the former specialized court building.
The charges against Petkov are related to the arrest of GERB leader Boyko Borisov, party PR Sevdelina Arnadova, and former Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov on March 17, 2022. Prosecutors allege that, in his capacity as Prime Minister at the time, Petkov abused his power by ordering the arrest of the three, which damaged their reputation and constituted a significant blow to the country’s standing. The state has since argued that the court would have dismissed the detention measures due to the lack of prosecutor backing.
Over two years after the arrests, Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov requested the parliamentary immunity of Kiril Petkov, with Petkov voluntarily waiving his immunity.
