SpaceX and Tesla have confirmed plans to build a massive semiconductor manufacturing complex called Terafab in Grimes County, Texas. The project, which involves an initial $16.8 billion investment, aims to produce specialized AI chips for Tesla’s robotics and autonomous vehicles, as well as high-power processors for SpaceX’s space-based data center ambitions.
The facility, which Elon Musk has described as the largest and most valuable building on Earth by far,
is set to span 100 million square feet of manufacturing space. While the project’s initial phase carries a $16.8 billion price tag, company filings suggest that total spending across multiple build-out phases could eventually reach $119 billion. The site, located north of Houston, represents a significant shift from earlier discussions that floated the company’s Giga Texas campus in Austin as the primary location for the factory.
Vertical Integration and AI Compute Scale
Terafab is designed to address a projected compute deficit, with SpaceX and Tesla estimating their combined annual demand will exceed one terawatt. By housing logic manufacturing, memory production, packaging, and testing under a single roof, the companies intend to accelerate production cycles and enable faster iterative improvements. This vertically integrated approach is intended to bridge the divide between current global chip supply and the compute demand of the future,
according to a post on the SpaceX website.

The facility will produce specialized processors optimized for edge computing and inference, specifically targeting hardware like Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robots and Cybercab autonomous vehicles. Additionally, the plant will manufacture high-power chips to support SpaceX’s goal of establishing space-based data centers, a move Musk has previously identified as critical for scaling artificial intelligence.
Energy Infrastructure and Resource Management
To support the massive power requirements of the semiconductor campus, SpaceX plans to develop its own on-site energy infrastructure. Riley Trettel, who manages energy and data center development for SpaceX, confirmed during a public meeting in Grimes County that the company will construct natural gas-fired power plants and large-scale battery arrays for energy storage. The company has also committed to sourcing water from the local Gibbons Creek Reservoir rather than drawing from regional groundwater, with plans to implement on-site wastewater treatment and recycling measures.

Local Economic Impact and Community Concerns
The project is expected to create at least 3,000 jobs, with local officials emphasizing the potential for workforce development in Grimes and Brazos counties. The companies have noted that the jobs created at the facility will span a wide range of functions.
Despite the economic projections, the project has faced scrutiny regarding transparency and the allocation of tax incentives. During a public meeting held Wednesday, hundreds of residents raised questions about the terms of the development.
Intel’s Role and Financial Scope
While the project is a joint venture between Tesla and SpaceX—following the latter’s absorption of xAI—Intel has also been named as a contributing partner. Details regarding the exact nature of Intel’s involvement remain limited, though the initial phase is expected to utilize Intel’s 14A process technology.
