Sporting Lisbon’s New Signing: Souleymane Faye – A Rising Star?

Sporting Lisbon has secured the signing of Souleymane Faye, a 22-year-old Senegalese winger previously making waves in Spain. While largely unknown to the casual fan, Faye has been a key figure for Granada, contributing six assists and two goals in 21 official appearances this season. But who exactly is this new addition, and what qualities does he bring to the Portuguese giants?

Inside Scoop: A Teammate’s Perspective

To understand Faye’s potential, A BOLA spoke with Guilherme Fernandes, a Portuguese goalkeeper currently playing for Real Valladolid. Fernandes, a product of Sporting’s youth academy, shares a close friendship with Faye, forged during their time together at Real Betis last season. They even faced each other as opponents this season when Valladolid played Granada.

Key Attributes: Pace, Dribbling, and Goal Threat

“What can I say about Faye? What stands out immediately is his speed, combined with enormous potential in one-on-one situations. He’s very strong when changing direction and caused us a lot of difficulties this season, even in the first match against Granada. He has goals and many assists. I think he’ll fit perfectly into a team like Sporting, surrounded by talented players, he’ll be able to shine even brighter,” Fernandes explained.

Mental Fortitude and Work Ethic

“He’s more than prepared for this challenge. He comes from Senegal, from humble beginnings, and understands this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He was a very hard worker at Betis, and believe me, he worked incredibly hard to take this step,” Fernandes added.

He’s got a lot of pace, a lot of game. In the Spanish second division, there are no international breaks, he’s playing and with a lot of rhythm. If Rui Borges decides to give him minutes, he will respond fully, especially in terms of fitness.

Guilherme Fernandes told A BOLA he exchanged messages with Faye in recent days. “He’s happy and very motivated to have this opportunity to showcase himself at a giant club like Sporting. He’s a player with some similarities to another in the squad. If Rui Borges can harness his goal-scoring ability, he could be a Quenda 2.0. In the game we played against Granada, he started on the left and finished on the right. He has a lot of versatility, and that’s a big advantage for a big club. His performance doesn’t drop playing on either flank,” he reinforced, believing he could be an important asset this season.

“He’s got a lot of pace, a lot of game. In the Spanish second division, there are no international breaks, he’s playing and with a lot of rhythm. If Rui Borges decides to give him minutes, he will respond fully, especially in terms of fitness,” he concluded.
