Správa železnic has issued its largest historical design tender, putting out an open competition with a maximum price set at 711 milionů korun to build a new main railway station in Brno, as reported across multiple outlets. This move advances a decades-long plan to relocate the station to a new position. The organization has allocated 5,4 miliardy korun for construction preparations, with nearly half of that sum dedicated to high-speed rail.
Project Details for Brno Main Station and Heršpice
The public contract was published on the procurement profile, covering the preparation of documentation for building permits, property-law preparations, and project processing in the BIM (Building Information Modeling) format. According to Správa železnic, the work is divided into multiple stages, with the specific tender named “Železniční uzel Brno, etapa Heršpice a Osobní nádraží” covering the largest share of the work. Besides the main station itself, this stage includes the reconstruction of the station in Horní Heršpice.
Did You Know?
Following the signing of the contract, a detailed engineering-geological survey will begin immediately alongside the settlement of all affected properties to accelerate subsequent project phases, as stated by Správa železnic. The selected designer will prepare all necessary documentation for the building permit and submit the application themselves. The project also requires creating and continuously updating data for a public GIS portal, as well as providing designer supervision during the creation of subsequent execution documentation.
Reconstruction aims to boost capacity and reliability
The reconstruction of the railway node is intended to increase capacity and reliability for both passenger and freight traffic while enabling the integration of planned high-speed rail lines into Brno. Outlets such as iROZHLAS and Archiweb.cz note that while past estimates pointed to a construction start in 2028, current timelines published by Správa železnic place the start of construction “after 2032,” with project costs for the broader node reconstruction estimated at over 70 miliard korun.

Independent of the railway relocation, urban development is already underway in the area between the current and future stations.
Region and city representatives approved station relocation
Disputes over the station’s location officially lasted from 1924, though unofficial disagreements began 85 years prior following the completion of the railway from Vienna. This conflict ended in February 2018 when the South Moravian Region and Brno representatives approved moving the station closer to the Svratka river. The new site will provide more space and better transfer links to the Zvonařka bus terminal and planned public transit options, including a possible metro.
The new station will be linked to the current one via the Evropská třída boulevard, featuring a tram line, cycle path, and sidewalks. The city is also developing the Trnitá district nearby to accommodate 15 tisíc residents. Mayor Markéta Vaňková stated in September that the city cannot wait for the state to start construction.
Broader Network Modernization
The node reconstruction includes the area of the current lower station and the Horní Heršpice station. The first design contract for the node was issued last summer for the Černovice stop and track. Other planned modernizations include the section between Brno-Židenice and the Brno-Černovice junction, as well as the Brno-Maloměřice station. In May, spokesperson David Kabele told ČTK that a tender for the Židenice station and tracks, which will move closer to Bubeníčkova street tram stops, should be issued in the autumn.

Details on design tender costs and construction timeline
What is the maximum price for the new design tender?
The maximum permissible price for the design and preparation tender is set at 711 milionů korun, according to Správa železnic.
When is construction on the new Brno station expected to begin?
Správa železnic currently indicates that construction on this stage will begin on the turn of the 2030s, or after 2032 according to updated schedule figures reported by iROZHLAS.
What areas are included in this specific phase of the project?
The contract covers the construction of the new main station, the reconstruction of the station in Horní Heršpice, and related infrastructure across the current dolní nádraží and surrounding locations.
It remains unknown when the tender for the Židenice station and tracks will be officially published.
