"It’s a typical response to strong winds that blow inland," explained Johan Craeymeersch, a marine biologist. "The starfish get stuck in the surf and are unable to swim back out, so they’re pushed onto the beach."
Temporary Residents
While such events are not rare, the sheer number of sea stars this time is remarkable. The regional broadcaster, NH, reports that these delicate creatures are struggling to survive out of water. Once they’re out, they quickly succumb to dehydration and exposure.
However, their temporary residency on the shore brings an unexpected feast for nearby birds, who wouldn’t otherwise have access to this resource. "It’s a win-win situation, except for the starfish, of course," said Craeymeersch.

Starfish play a crucial role in maintaining the health of coastal ecosystems, particularly mosselbanks. Their unique tube feet and suckers allow them to pry open mussel shells, keeping populations in check. They also feed on other small invertebrates, maintaining a balance in their underwater world.
When these cleaning crew members are swept onto shore, they create a unique tapestry that, albeit temporary, offers a fascinating glimpse into the vibrant life that thrives beneath the waves.
