Headline: "Amazon Delivery Driver‘s Stressful Night: 80 Packages Dumped in Massachusetts Woods Before Christmas"
In an unusual turn of events, a stressed Amazon delivery driver left behind more than 80 packages in a Massachusetts forest just days before Christmas, according to a statement from the Lakeville Police Department (LPD).
On the night of December 22, around 2 AM, LPD Sergeant Shawn Robert was on routine patrol when he noticed multiple items scattered near the edge of the woods at 63 Bedford Street. Upon investigating, he found several large bags filled with Amazon packages.
The officer gathered the abandoned packages and transported them back to the police station. There, he discovered over 80 Amazon parcels that had not been delivered. The LPD then contacted a local Amazon distribution center in Middleborough, Massachusetts, to return the undelivered items.
In a video captured by Robert’s body camera, he can be seen making his way through the dense forest to reach the bags filled with packages. Once he reached them, he dragged and organized them to the side of the road.
Despite recovering nearly 100 packages and bags, the LPD received no reports of lost or stolen packages in the area. In the initial statement, LPD Chief Matthew Perkins said they were unsure why the packages had been left beside the road in that wooded area, which leads to an industrial zone. However, Perkins praised Sergeant Robert for discovering the abandoned packages during his routine patrol.
"I’m sure the sergeant helped spare many local residents a Christmas headache by finding these abandoned bags and getting them returned to Amazon, hopefully in time for a Christmas delivery," Perkins emphasized.
In a subsequent update on December 23, the LPD revealed the reason behind the discovery of approximately 80 Amazon packages. A driver visited the police station that day to confess that he had left the boxes and bags by the roadside at around 7 PM on December 21 because he was feeling overwhelmed.
"Our Lakeville Police officers turned over this matter to Amazon, and at this time, we are not seeking any criminal charges," Perkins stated in the press release. The driver plans to inform his manager about the incident.
This news comes in the wake of a FedEx driver being arrested in Holmes County, Florida, for tossing undelivered packages out of his truck because it was too late to return them to the warehouse, as reported by The Independent.
"FedEx takes this matter very seriously and is cooperating fully with the authorities in their investigation," a FedEx spokesperson told The Independent. The driver was charged with organized scheme to defraud, grand theft, and illegal dumping, and was subsequently terminated by the company.
