Breaking News: Deadly New Year’s Eve Attack in New Orleans – At Least 15 Dead, ISIS Link Suspected
In an unprecedented act of terrorism, a lone gunman, later identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. Army veteran, plowed a truck adorned with an ISIS flag through a crowded New Year’s Eve celebration in New Orleans, leaving at least 15 people dead and dozens more injured. The attack on Wednesday morning has been classified as an act of terrorism by the FBI, who believe Jabbar may have had assistance and ties to international terrorist organizations.
The annual event on the bustling Bourbon Street in the French Quarter, typically a symbol of joy and revelry, quickly turned into a scene of chaos and carnage. Witnesses described bodies lying in pools of blood, and terrified pedestrians fleeing into clubs and restaurants for safety. A college football playoff game at the nearby Superdome was delayed due to the tragedy.
Jabbar, a 42-year-old Texas resident, evaded a police blockade and rammed into pedestrians before exiting his vehicle and opening fire on law enforcement. He was subsequently killed in a shootout with police. Authorities recovered multiple firearms, explosive devices, and other suspicious items from the scene. The FBI has since discovered social media videos where Jabbar expresses his motivation to carry out the attack in the name of ISIS.
"For those who refuse to believe in pure evil, witness the scene on our streets this morning," said Louisiana Senator John Kennedy in response to the attack.
Investigators are currently working to determine if Jabbar had any accomplices and whether the attack is connected to other explosions that occurred in Honolulu and outside a Las Vegas hotel owned by President-elect Donald Trump.
In the aftermath of the massacre, New Orleans residents and tourists alike grapple with the shock and sadness of the event. While some neighborhoods remain locked down, others appear to be carrying on as usual, with people seen dining and drinking at nearby establishments.
President Joe Biden condemned the "despicable" and "horrific" attack, offering his condolences and support to the victims and the people of New Orleans. He vowed that the nation would not tolerate any form of violence in its communities.
This attack marks the deadliest ISIS-inspired incident in the United States in recent years and serves as a grim reminder of the continued threat posed by international terrorism. The FBI has warned of increased risks of such incidents following recent conflicts between Israel and Hamas.
