Ukrainian law enforcement agencies have thwarted a brazen attempt by Russian-backed saboteurs to disrupt railway operations in western Ukraine. A joint operation by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the National Police led to the timely arrest of two диверсанты before they could cause significant harm.
Disrupted Plot
The incident unfolded on the railway tracks in the Hmelnytskyi region. The диверсанты, acting on behalf of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), planted a home-made explosive device along the train line. Their aim was to detonate the device, packed with_quantity unspecified[trotyl and plastid], remotely when a passing locomotive approached. To document their action, they recorded the detonation on video.
Heroic Intervention
Miraculously, the locomotive engineer spotted the damaged track in time and managed to halt the train, averting a potential catastrophe. The train, a part of Ukraine’s state-owned railroad operator Укрзалізниця, proceeded to its destination once the tracks were repaired.
Rapid Arrest
Acting swiftly, SBU and National Police personnel apprehended the диверсанты within hours of the attempted attack. Despite their effort to switch vehicles to evade capture, the culprits were held accountable for their actions. Evidence, including remnants of the explosive device and incriminating mobile phones, was recovered during a search.
Perpetrators Identified
The arrested диверсанты were identified as two local men, aged 28 and 29. One of the suspects was reportedly struggling with наркоманія (drug addiction), while the other was identified as a deserter from the Ukrainian military. Their involvement with the FSB was facilitated through Telegram channels, according to an investigation by Ukrainian authorities.
Charges and Consequences
Both suspects face charges under Article 113, Part 2 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code: диверсія (sabotage) committed during a time of martial law. If convicted, they could face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Previous Attacks
This operation comes on the heels of two earlier successful intelligence operations by the SBU, including the disruption of a potential terrorist attack against Ukrainian military personnel and the dismantling of an FSB network spy on волонтерам (volunteers) and international representatives.
The Security Service of Ukraine, in collaboration with the National Police, remain vigilant in safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity against continued Russian aggression.
