The late-night pileup began when an eastbound BYD ute collided head-on with a Lexus SUV on the Hume Highway in Cabramatta, according to statements from police. The impact forced the Lexus into a Mazda sedan, causing all three vehicles to come to a stop. Firefighters had to cut the driver of the Lexus, a man in his 50s, out of the wreckage. A police spokesperson confirmed he was subsequently transported to Westmead Hospital with critical head injuries, where he remained fighting for life according to reporting by 9News.
Paramedics treated the male driver of the BYD ute at the scene before he was also taken to the hospital. A crime scene was established following the impact, and specialized crash investigation experts began examining the wreckage and roadway to determine the sequence of events. Pediatric Wards Receive Young Victims After Impact
Emergency services transported a total of nine individuals to area hospitals following the incident. Among the occupants of the BYD ute, an eight-year-old child suffered facial injuries and was taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Police noted that two other children from the same vehicle required treatment for lacerations caused by seatbelts before they were transferred to the same pediatric facility for further care.
Additional precautions were taken for the occupants of the Mazda sedan. According to police statements, the male driver of the sedan along with three other passengers—comprising a woman and two teenage girls—were transported to local hospitals as a precaution. None of the occupants in the sedan or the remaining minor injuries from the ute were initially reported to be in critical condition.
