Peew ski seek new elections, not cabinet shuffles

Title: Deadlock in Bulgaria: DPS-Novo Načalo Urges Form Government or New Elections

The leader of DPS-Novo Načalo, Delyan Peevski, has entreated ongoing negotiating teams from GERB, Demokratichna Bulgaria, BSP-Obuchina Lyevitza, and "Imat takyv narond" to either establish a government or proceed to fresh early parliamentary elections. Addressing journalists at the Party House, Peevski emphasized the necessity of forming a government, warning that failure to do so would lead to new elections.

"People should re-rank parties based on who will get the work done," Peevski asserted, expressing confidence that DPS-Novo Načalo’s daily efforts for the people will escalate their trust and make them the leading party in new elections.

Meanwhile, DPS-Novo Načalo’s priorities focus on legislation benefiting the people. Today’s meeting of the Chairmanship Council discussed the lack of active energy and other committees, but Peevski lamented theettet’s indifference to surging electricity and gas prices, with over 100 million levs set to enrich gas oligarch Sasho Donchev with KEGV’s assistance.

When queried about fellow MPs’ rejection of DPS-Novo Načalo’s proposal for a moratorium on electricity price hikes and zero VAT on bread, Peevski attributed the resistance to energy oligarchs’ influence. "The robbery is monstrous," he declared, "and colleagues don’t understand why they’re in the National Assembly."

In response to questions about supporting Borislav Sarafov’s candidacy for Chief Prosecutor, Peevski swiftly rejected Ivo Prokopiev, whom he labeled a "Soros-like oligarch with eTablets." Peevski declined to comment on whether his parliamentary group would support judicial authority law amendments or how they would vote in the plenary.

As negotiations among GERB, Demokratichna Bulgaria, BSP-Obuchina Lyevitza, and "Imat takyv narond" remained silent about failed cabinet talks, DPS-Novo Načalo pushed for action, advocating for a government or new elections to address Bulgarians’ pressing needs.

Latest Developments: GERB Continues Government Talks Without ‘Democratic Bulgaria‘

In a recent update, GERB has announced that negotiations for forming a new government are proceeding without the participation of ‘Democratic Bulgaria’. The party’s Executive Committee has tasked its negotiation team to continue talks with ‘BSP – United Left‘ and ‘There Is Such a People’ to establish a regular government.

The move comes amidst talks to form a stable government following last year’s elections. GERB’s Executive Committee has confirmed the nomination of Roshen Zheliazkov as the party’s candidate for Prime Minister, with the first mandate of GERB – SDS. Zheliazkov has been authorized to lead the party’s negotiation team.

Additionally, GERB’s Executive Committee has instructed its negotiation team to engage in discussions to secure support for the cabinet and the formation of a majority that would subsequently address changes in the Electoral Code and the Law on Judicial Authority.

In an interesting turn of events, GERB has stated that it is open to holding talks with ‘Democratic Bulgaria’ if the latter expresses willingness to support a regular government under the leadership of Roshen Zheliazkov.

Petkov Blames Peevski Dependency for Cabinet Negotiation Failure

by Chief Editor January 7, 2025

"Political Tensions Rise as GERB Refuses to Sign Declaration, Signal Clear for Elections"

In a clear indication of upcoming electionsDeyan Peevski has openly declared his intention to run. The Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party has refused to sign a declaration, implying their unwillingness to sever ties with Peevski. This decision has resulted in a clear path towards elections.

Kiril Petkov, co-chairman of "Continue the Change" (PP), stated this in response to GERB’s decision to halt negotiations for forming a regular government. Petkov was speaking at a ceremony commemorating the 177th anniversary of the birth of Hristo Botev, a revolutionary poet, in Sofia’s Borisova Garden.

"I’m sorry to say, showing that this dependence between the two, until it’s broken, makes a better future for Bulgaria difficult," Petkov commented. Petkov also reminded that PP did not participate in GERB’s cabinet talks for the first mandate.

Petkov also addressed the proposed law amendments aimed at halting the process of electing a new chief prosecutor. "The most important for us is to see at first glance what will happen with the Law on Judicial Power (ZSP)," he noted. Petkov stressed that changes to the ZSP are of immense importance, and that an acting chief prosecutor cannot be elected as the titleholder for a seven-year term.

In a recent poll, Bulgarians have shared their wishes for their deputies by 2025. Topping the list is "Work and fewer tall tales" with 36.6%, followed by "New elections" at 29.2%. Other preferences include "Full term" at 15.0%, "Cheap meatballs" at 15.1%, and "Enlightenment and no cable cutting" at 4.1%.

Expert Opinion: GERB Had No Hopes for Government

Bulgarian Coalition Talks Collapse: GERB Blames ‘Democratic Bulgaria‘, Possible Eighth Elections Loom

In a sudden turn of events, Bulgaria’s GERB party has abruptly ended coalition talks, with the likelihood of the country’s eighth consecutive elections increasing. GERB, led by Boyko Borisov, has pinned the blame for the failed negotiations squarely on ‘Democratic Bulgaria’ (DB).

The primary stumbling block in the talks was DB’s refusal to accept GERB’s proposed candidates for the position of prime minister. Initially, GERB offered Borisov as the candidate, but after his rejection, they proposed Rosen Zheliazkov. However, DB also turned down this nomination.

Addressing the situation, sociologist Elena Darijeva commented on the ‘Bulgaria Mornings’ show, "We’re once again faced with the question of whether the chances of forming a regular government are dwindling towards a statistical anomaly, or if there’s still hope."

Darijeva argued that the talks had indeed broken down, citing the lack of time and the need for the president to issue a mandate to a prime minister candidate. She suggested that if the talks were truly over, the question remained of who was to blame, and who stood to gain from the failure to form a coalition.

Political scientist Professor Nikolai Nakov, speaking to Bulgaria ON AIR, saw GERB’s initial offer of Borisov as a negative sign, indicating a lack of faith in forming a government. He suggested that DB’s rejection of two candidates could be interpreted as an attempt to secure a stronger position in future negotiations.

The collapse of these coalition talks threatens to exacerbate Bulgaria’s political instability, risking a descent into ungovernability. While political leaders may attempt to buy time in the short term, the long-term consequences could be significant, including electoral losses.

Despite some remaining hope for a consensus, the political dynamics and strategic interests of different factions make the future of the talks uncertain. As Bulgaria braces for potential eighth elections, the country’s political landscape remains in flux.

"Manol Genov: Decision to Resume Mandate Made by GERB"

Breaking Talks: GERB-SDS Halts Government Formation Talks; BSP Deputy Chairman Comments

In a sudden turn of events, Elections 20XX: Which Political Parties Spent the Most on Advertising?"</p>”>GERB-SDS has announced it is ceasing talks to form a new government, with Boll بلغ BSP Deputy Chairman Mladen Genov offering his insights to journalists on the development.

"Beginning Tuesday, we start working on parliamentary rules – establishing committees, holding meetings," Genov said, when asked about the return of the mandate. "Whether the envelope (containing the mandate) will be returned immediately, that’s a decision for the largest party and the mandate-holder – GERB."

Pressed on whether the country was headed for fresh elections, Genov stated, "I don’t see another likelihood, given that GERB, as the leading party in the talks, has decided to stop them." He added that "Democratic Bulgaria" (DB) had not accepted the candidacy of Rossen Jeliazkov for Prime Minister, which, in his view, contributed to GERB’s decision to halt negotiations.

Over the past days, negotiation teams from GERB-SDS, DB, BSP-LEFT, and There Is Such a People (ITN) have been working on formulating points in the governance agreement and decision-making mechanisms. Despite progress in talks, consensus on the composition of the government and the name of the Prime Minister remained elusive.

Early today, GERB’s press center announced it was halting talks. "No agreement was reached with Democratic Bulgaria on the personnel composition of the future government and the name of the candidate for Prime Minister," read the statement. GERB thanked BSP-LEFT and ITN for their constructive approach.

Meanwhile, DB revealed it had learned from media reports that GERB had already stopped talking to them. "The [coalition] agreement is not yet completed," they noted. With talks frozen, all eyes are now on GERB to see if it will immediately return the mandate, as the largest political force and mandate-holder.

Taiwan’s President Seeks Exchange Talks with China

Taiwan President Lifts Concerns about China‘s Travel Restrictions, Seeks Reciprocity

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has expressed willingness for a balanced, respectful, healthy, and organized exchange with China but has raised questions about Beijing’s sincerity, given the current blockade on tourism. Since taking office in May, Lai has repeatedly proposed talks with China, only to be turned down, according to Reuters.

China views democratically-run Taiwan as its territory and lambasts Lai as a "separatist," asserting that only Taiwan’s people can decide their future. Speaking at a press conference, Lai criticized China for hindering normal interaction by restricting travel for Chinese tourists visiting or studying on the island, a treatment not reciprocated for Taiwanese traveling to China.

"However, I must emphasize that Taiwan hopes to have a healthy and organized exchange with China, based on the principles of reciprocity and dignity," Lai underscored.

Journalists should scrutinize China’s logic behind allowing their citizens to freely travel to nations like the U.S. and Japan, while imposing stringent checks when it comes to Taiwan, Lai added.

Taiwan and China have exchanged accusations repeatedly over tourism and travel restrictions. In June, Taiwan advised its citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to China, following afits’ Hang’s threat to execute those deemed "hardcore" supporters of Taiwan’s independence. China’s President Xi Jinping, in his New Year’s Day speech, asserted that no one can impede China’s "reunion" with Taiwan.

Ukraine Unveils Surprise Strike for New Year’s Eve; Zelenskyy and Putin Prepare

Ukraine Plans Surprise Strike as Christmas Approaches; Zelensky and Putin Hold Talks

In an unexpected turn of events, Ukrainian officials have hinted at a potential surprise military operation during the Christmas period. The announcement comes amidst ongoing peace talks between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

A high-ranking Ukrainian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the military is preparing an "unexpected move" to catch Russian forces off guard. The official declined to provide specific details, stating only that the operation was designed to "send a strong message to the invading forces."

The revelation comes as both Zelensky and Putin engage in talks aimed at ending the nearly year-long conflict. The two leaders held a marathon round of discussions in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, with both sides expressing a desire for a negotiated settlement.

Zelensky, who previously ruled out any territorial concessions to Russia, appears to have softened his stance. He suggested that he could consider certain "compromises" if they were in the best interests of Ukraine. However, he maintained that any peace deal would require the full withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory.

For his part, Putin reiterated Russia’s demands for the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, as well as official recognition of Russia’s annexation of Crimea. He also struck a conciliatory note, suggesting that Russia was open to discussions on a possible ceasefire.

The prospect of a surprise Ukrainian military operation has raised fears of further bloodshed during the holiday season. However, some analysts suggest that the Ukrainian move could be a calculated gamble to strengthen its position at the negotiating table.

As the conflict grinds on, the people of Ukraine and Russia remain hopeful that the coming new year will bring an end to the fighting. With both sides committed to finding a peaceful resolution, the next few weeks will be critical in determining the future of the region.

Putin Rejects Trump’s Proposal to Resolve Conflict

Putin Rebuffs Trump‘s Ukraine Ceasefire Proposal; US, Russia Maintain Military Pressure

In a move-weighted toward "nowhere," Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected a ceasefire proposal devised by team Trump, USA’s newly minted presidential administration. The Institute for the Study of War reports that the Greens красная план tailored a ten-year moratorium on Ukraine’s potential NATO membership, an olive branch to end hostilities. However, Putin dismissed this gesture as "meaning nothing, be it today, tomorrow, or ten years hence."

While spurning the olive branch, Putin slyly offered Slovakia as a potential stage for Russia-Ukraine peace talks, adding a twist to this diplomatic ballet. On the other hand, President Biden promptly promised further US military aid to Ukraine following a recent Russian missile attack, including advanced air defense systems.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the increased US support, emphasizing the need for stronger military backing and diplomatic clout to counter Russia’s aggression.

As the geopolitical chessboard remains tense, recent days witnessed Russian shelling and drone strikes in Sumy Oblast, Ukraine, which claimed at least one civilian life. Attacks persist across the country, even nearing the capital.

The stage is set for a prolonged standoff as both sides maintain military pressure, punctuated by diplomatic whirlwinds, testing the resilience of ordinary Ukrainians.

Government to Establish Ukraine Agreement if Guevorkian Refrains

by Chief Editor December 19, 2024

‘Democratic Bulgaria‘ & GERB Align on Ukraine Pact, Despite earlier Rift; Main Revolutionary Power Digs In

‘Bulgaria Can Sign Ukraine Deal Immediately, No Parliamentary Sanction Needed’, insists ‘Democratic Bulgaria’. The centrist GERB party, despite its leader Boyko Borisov’s earlier refusal to back the security cooperation pact between Bulgaria and Ukraine, voiced shared support for a immediate signing by the caretaker government.

In a joint statement, ‘Democratic Bulgaria’ and GERB agreed, "The two sides concur that the Ukraine agreement can be signed immediately by the caretaker cabinet, which holds the mandate for this purpose, without parliamentary endorsement. Should the caretaker cabinet falter, a future regular cabinet will sign it."

Yet, the stance of the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and its allies, ‘Bulgarianaphiles’, remains firm. They called for Parliament to grant a mandate to acting Foreign Minister Kalin Mitrev to ink the pact urgently. However, Speaker Natalia Keranova refused to entertain this motion, leaving the parliamentary pathway uncertain.

Bulgaria’s 10-year commitment under the pact involves political, economic, and social assistance to Ukrainian refugees, military training, and continued military aid.

Meanwhile, talks for government formation between GERB-SDS and ‘Democratic Bulgaria’ proceeded today, with policies in education, social policy, healthcare, culture, regional development, defense, and foreign affairs on the agenda. GERB-SDS also held talks with ‘There Is Such a People’.

In a relatable Facebook post, ‘Democratic Bulgaria’ asserted, "The interim cabinet has a valid mandate to sign the Ukraine agreement. If they fail, a future government will do so."

EURnews: Negotiations between GERB and ITN Focus on Regular Government with Full Mandate

A crucial meeting between the negotiation teams of GERB-SDS and ITN took place today, with both sides expressing the need for a regular government with a full management term. This aligns with GERB’s ongoing discussions with other political parties throughout the week, which have included three meetings with "Democrats for Strong Bulgaria" and one with the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) – United Left.

The GERB-SDS team and ITN plan to continue their talks to draft a legislative program. If negotiations conclude successfully, this program will serve as the foundation for a future government agreement.
