Russia’s war in Ukraine | CNN”>Ukraine Receives First $1 Billion from U.S. Using Frozen Russian Assets
U.S. allies have shown unwavering support for Ukraine’s recovery with the first installment of a $20 billion fund. The funds, drawn from the spoils of Russia’s war machine, have begun to flow. Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Denys Shmyhal, announced on his Telegram channel that Ukraine has received the first billion dollars from this corridor.
"Thanks to our American partners and the World Bank for this crucial step toward justice," Shmyhal stated. "We look forward to the full confiscation of Russian assets being used to rebuild Ukraine."
The U.S. Department of Commerce declared this aid back in early December, indicating that the funds will be channeled through a special trust fund under the World Bank. The unique funding mechanism sees the money being issued as a loan but repayments are covered by profits from seized Russian assets.
This initiative outlines the G7’s strategy, approved in October, to provide Ukraine with at least €50 billion in total. This assistance comes directly from Russia’s captured assets, effectively transforming Moscow’s aggression into financial fuel for Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.
