President-elect Donald Trump Declines Pre-Inauguration Meeting with Putin, Citing Ongoing Conflict in Ukraine
In an unexpected turn, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has expressed that a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin before his January 20 inauguration would be "inappropriate." This shift comes after Trump repeatedly stated his intention to collaborate with Putin during his election campaign.
At a press conference in the U.S., Trump acknowledged Putin’s desire to meet, stating, "I’m aware that Putin would like to meet. However, I don’t think it’s appropriate to do so until January 20, as there are currently many young soldiers losing their lives daily." He further emphasized that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which he blames on the Obama administration, should never have occurred and could have been prevented if he were president.
Trump’s stance on a potential meeting with Putin contradicts his previous stance on diplomatic relations with Russia. Throughout his campaign, he frequently boasted about his good rapport with the Russian leader and even promised to conclude the war in Ukraine within 24 hours if elected.
Recently, during his annual press conference, Putin hinted at his willingness to engage in talks with Trump, stating, "I’m ready for such dialogue." Meanwhile, Trump himself declared on December 23 that the Russian government had expressed a strong desire to meet as soon as possible to discuss the Ukrainian conflict.
With the inauguration less than a month away, the world awaits Trump’s formal stance on Russia and how he will approach U.S.-Russia relations, especially in regards to Ukraine.
