Ukraine Urges Citizens to Limit Use of High-Consumption Home Devices

The Ukrainian energy system continues to recover following Russia’s widespread missile and drone attacks last year, yet there are no plans for power outages on Thursday, January 9. "Ukrenergo" announced this in the "Kyiv Digital" app.

In a Telegram channel update, "Ukrenergo" reported that as of 9:30am on Monday, January 8, electricity consumption was on par with the previous day, Tuesday, January 7.

The company called on citizens to limit the use of high-energy consuming household appliances, especially between 5pm and 11pm, and between 6am and 11am. These include electric stoves, washing machines, water heaters, and air conditioners.

"Remember, the Ukrainian energy system is still rebuilding after Russia’s attacks. Repairs and replacements are ongoing to restore damaged and destroyed equipment," the company stated.

While tomorrow remains planned without power outages, the situation is still fragile. Ukrainians are urged to conserve energy where they can, contributing to the overall stability of the power grid.

Ukrenego Updates on Energy Situation and Power Outages for Jan 5, 2025

Ukraine‘s national energy company, Ukrenergo, issued a statement via the "Kyiv Digital" app, reassuring that the energy system is stable and there will be no scheduled power outages on Sunday, Jan 5, 2025. Although power cuts were anticipated, sufficient energy is now available, the company confirmed.

"Enough electricity is available, so no cuts are planned for tomorrow," Ukrenergo stated. "To aid the energy system, please limit your usage between 5 PM and 11 PM, and 6 AM to 11 AM."

However, the situation remains fluid and could change abruptly due to potential heavy Russian strikes on critical infrastructure or adverse weather conditions, the company cautioned.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy had stressed that any domestic electricity shortage, even the smallest, would halt energy exports. Minister Herman Haluschenko clarified that "If we have a deficit, not even one kilowatt will be exported."

Haluschenko also discussed why 2024 was particularly challenging for Ukraine’s energy system, including unusual timing of Russian attacks, which shifted from October to March.

"Russia Shifts Tactic: Targeted Strikes on Energy Infrastructure"

Russia Shifts Tactics: Now Targeting Ukraine’s Power Grid with Cluster Munitions

The Russian military has adopted a new tactic in its attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure,根据乌克兰能源部长赫尔曼·加卢先科(Herman Galushchenko)当地时间1月2日上午在电视马拉松节目中表示。 Instead of the large, strategic strikes that characterized the early stages of the conflict, Moscow’s forces are now employing cluster munitions to inflict maximum damage on Ukraine’s power grid.

"Russia’s tactics have changed. They’re now usingCluster munitions, which disperse smaller bomblets over a wide area, to wreck Ukraine’s energy systems," explained Galushchenko. He also confirmed that 2023 was the most challenging year for Ukraine’s power grid in terms of Russian attacks, with 13 large-scale barrages launched between March and December, and nightly assaults adding to the pressure.

Over the past month, Russia has quadrupled its efforts, launching a series of massive attacks on Ukraine’s power systems using all types of weaponry at its disposal. However, Galushchenko insists that Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is holding strong, despite the onslaught.

Poland Ready to Boost Electricity Exports to Ukraine if Slovakia Throughs

Poland Offers to Boost Power Exports to Ukraine Amid Tensions with Slovakia over Gas Transit

Battling for Ukraine’s energy security involves more than just gas pipelines. As a storm brews over Russia’s gas transit through Ukraine, Poland has stepped up, offering to increase power exports to its eastern neighbor if Slovakia follows through on its threat to cut off Ukrainian supply.

Polish officials, cited by Bloomberg and later echoed by "European Truth," insist they’re ready to beef up domestic power production to balance any instability in Ukraine’s energy grid. This move comes on the heels of Slovakia’s prime minister, Robert Fiaco, threatening to halt power exports to Ukraine if necessary.

The dispute between Ukraine and Slovakia is tied to the former’s refusal to renew its gas transit agreement with Russia after 2024. Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has made his position clear: Ukraine will not revive its pact with "Gazprom" and will not route Russian gas as Azeri.

Against this backdrop, Fiaco made waves by visiting Russia and engaging with President Vladimir Putin. But Poland isn’t wavering in its support for Ukraine’s energy needs.

Russian Tactics Evolve: winked Targeted Attacks on Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure

Ukraine‘s Energy Crisis Deepens: Russia‘s Attacks Disrupt Power Transmission and Generation

The situation with electricity supply has significantly deteriorated in Ukraine’s eastern and central regions, with the city of Dnipro and the Kharkiv region being the most affected. Russia launched a series of attacks on December 28, 13, and 25, targeting both electricity generation facilities and transmission systems. The first two attacks primarily hit transmission, leading to distinctive power outage graphics, particularly in western regions where disruptions were minimal or non-existent, while the rest of the country experienced simultaneous second-wave outages.

Due to damaged networks, power production had to be reduced at nuclear power plants. The December 25 attack focused on generation facilities, causing significant damage in seven regions, including several thermal power plants, thermal power stations, and Dnieper hydropower plants. Nuclear power generation was increased to compensate for the losses.

After the December 25 attack, the power grid lost a substantial portion of its generation capacity. While theoretically, imports could have compensated for this loss, practical constraints—such as previously damaged transmission infrastructure still awaiting repairs—made imports ineffective. Consequently, power outages for consumers remained non-uniform.

Repair works have been swift, with a significant reduction in power outages on December 26 and 27. However, the situation remains challenging, necessitating power restrictions even on December 28, a weekend day.

Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, German Galushchenko, reported that Russia has changed its attack tactics this year, increasingly relying on rocket strikes equipped with cluster munitions, which cause more destruction and require longer recovery times, including demining efforts.

Despite the complexity of the situation, a complete blackout remains unlikely, according to Alexander Kharchenko, director of the Center for Energy Research. However, he expects more challenging conditions in eastern regions due to significant damage to local generation facilities and insufficient power supply.

Kharchenko also raised concerns about attacks on heat supply systems, particularly in Dnipro and Kharkiv, where thermal power plants were targeted. He argued that these attacks posed a more significant threat to the population than mere power outages.

Fico Warns Ukraine: Power Cut Threat Looms

by Chief Editor December 28, 2024

Headline: Slovak PM Threatens Ukraine with Power Cuts Over Gas Transit Halt

Article:

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has officially warned Ukraine of potential power cuts due to the impending halt in Russian gas transit through Ukrainian territory. This threat comes as the New Year approaches, marking the deadline for the current gas transit agreement between Russia and Ukraine.

Fico, in an interview with Bloomberg on Friday, December 27, stated, "After January 1, we will assess the situation and possible reciprocal measures against Ukraine. If necessary, we will halt electricity supplies that are crucial for Ukraine, especially during power outages."

The Slovak government’s stance comes amidst ongoing negotiations between Russia and Ukraine over gas supplies and transit fees. With the current agreement set to expire on December 31, Russia has threatened to redirect gas supplies through alternative routes, potentially disrupting European energy markets.

This development follows a recent visit by Fico to Moscow on December 22, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss gas supplies. The meeting coincided with escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine over gas prices and transit fees.

The situation has also drawn the attention of Sловацкая Генеральная прокуратура (Slovak General Prosecutor’s Office), which has announced an investigation into Fico’s actions and his reported connections with Russia.

As Europe braces for potential energy supply disruptions, the diplomatic standoff between Russia and Ukraine continues. The outcome of these negotiations will significantly impact not only the energy security of Ukraine but also that of European countries dependent on Russian gas supplies.
