Tshwane Metro Police have successfully apprehended multiple suspects in a series of operations targeting copper cable theft across the city.

Crackdown at Pretoria West Substation

On Monday, 11 May 2026, the TMPD Cable Theft Unit caught three African male suspects red-handed. The arrests occurred at the Pretoria West substation after the unit responded to a report from their radio control room regarding alleged criminal activity.

TMPD spokesman Colonel Isaac Mahamba stated that officers swiftly attended the scene after receiving the report. Upon arrival, they found the suspects in the act of stealing copper cables.

Expert Insight: The focus on “essential infrastructure” highlights a critical vulnerability in city services. When thieves target substations and electric boxes, the resulting damage can lead to systemic disruptions that affect the broader community’s access to power and utility stability.

The TMPD continues to encourage residents to be vigilant. Colonel Mahamba has urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to cable theft or other crimes to their nearest TMPD regional police offices.
