Anies Visits Tom Lembong: Abolition Talk?

by Chief Editor August 1, 2025
written by Chief Editor

Anies Baswedan Weighs In on Prabowo’s Abolition of Tom Lembong: What Does It Mean for Indonesian Politics?

The recent decision by President Prabowo Subianto to grant abolition to former Trade Minister Thomas Trikasih Lembong, widely known as Tom Lembong, has sparked considerable discussion. Anies Baswedan, the former Governor of Jakarta, has added his voice to the conversation, signaling the potential ramifications for Indonesian politics and legal proceedings.

The Immediate Reaction: Anies’ Perspective

Anies Baswedan, a key political figure and former rival of Prabowo in the 2024 presidential election, visited Tom Lembong at Cipinang Prison. He stated that the abolition was “good news for Tom Lembong and his family.” Anies emphasized his intention to consult with Lembong and his legal team before commenting further. This cautious approach underscores the sensitivity surrounding the issue and its potential political implications.

Notably, Anies highlighted that Lembong was a member of his campaign team during the presidential race, adding another layer of intrigue to the situation. This connection raises questions about whether the abolition is a gesture of reconciliation or if it has deeper political motivations.

The Legal Framework: Understanding Abolition

What exactly is abolition? In the Indonesian legal system, abolition is a presidential prerogative to terminate ongoing legal proceedings against an individual. Minister of Law and Human Rights, Supratman Andi Agtas, clarified that all legal processes against Tom Lembong would cease following the granting of the abolition. This decision, however, requires approval from the House of Representatives (DPR).

Supratman explained that after receiving consideration from the DPR, President Prabowo will issue a Presidential Decree (Keppres) to formalize the abolition. The DPR has already approved the proposal, paving the way for the Keppres.

Did you know?

Abolition differs from amnesty. Amnesty is typically granted to a group of people, often in relation to political offenses, while abolition applies to an individual and focuses on halting legal proceedings.

Potential Future Trends: Political Reconciliation or Pragmatism?

Prabowo’s decision to grant abolition to Tom Lembong raises several questions about the future of Indonesian politics. Is this a genuine attempt at political reconciliation after a heated election? Or is it a pragmatic move aimed at consolidating power and building a broader coalition?

One possible trend is increased political stability. By reaching out to former rivals and their allies, Prabowo could be attempting to quell dissent and create a more unified government. However, this approach could also be seen as a compromise that dilutes his own agenda.

Poverty Data: World Bank vs. BPS – Key Differences Explained

by Chief Editor July 27, 2025
written by Chief Editor

The Poverty Line: Navigating Discrepancies and Understanding Future Trends

Understanding poverty statistics is crucial for effective policy-making and social programs. Recent reports highlight discrepancies in poverty figures, such as those published by the World Bank and national statistical agencies like Indonesia’s Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS). These differences aren’t necessarily contradictions but rather stem from varying methodologies and objectives.

Understanding the Methodological Divide

The World Bank often uses a global poverty line, currently around $6.85 per day, adjusted for Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). This allows for cross-country comparisons and monitoring global poverty reduction efforts. BPS, on the other hand, employs a “Cost of Basic Needs” (CBN) approach, calculating the minimum expenditure required to meet essential food and non-food needs within Indonesia.

For example, the World Bank’s 2024 report estimated that over 60.3% of Indonesia’s population lived below the $6.85 PPP poverty line. Meanwhile, BPS reported an 8.57% poverty rate for September 2024.

This difference is explained by the different standards used. The World Bank’s figure is based on a global standard relevant to upper-middle-income countries, while BPS focuses on the specific consumption patterns and needs of Indonesian households.

Future Trends in Poverty Measurement

As data collection methods evolve and technology advances, poverty measurement will likely become more granular and dynamic. Here are some potential future trends:

 • Increased Use of Real-Time Data: Integrating real-time data from sources like mobile phone usage, satellite imagery, and online transactions could provide more frequent and accurate poverty estimates than traditional surveys.
 • AI-Powered Poverty Mapping: Machine learning algorithms can analyze vast datasets to identify poverty hotspots and predict future trends, allowing for targeted interventions.
 • Multidimensional Poverty Indices (MPIs): Moving beyond income-based measures, MPIs will incorporate factors like health, education, and living standards to provide a more holistic understanding of poverty.
 • Personalized Poverty Lines: Tailoring poverty lines to individual or household characteristics could provide a more accurate assessment of vulnerability.

For example, the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) has pioneered the development and application of multidimensional poverty indices across numerous countries, offering a more nuanced view of deprivation than income alone. Learn more about OPHI.

Pro Tip: When analyzing poverty statistics, always consider the methodology used and the context in which the data was collected. Comparing figures across different sources without understanding their limitations can lead to misleading conclusions.

The Role of National Poverty Lines

While global poverty lines are useful for international comparisons, national poverty lines are essential for informing domestic policy. BPS’s approach, which considers the cost of basic needs like food, housing, education, healthcare, and clothing, reflects the specific challenges faced by Indonesian households.

BPS calculates the poverty line based on data from the National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas), which surveys hundreds of thousands of households twice a year. This data captures expenditure patterns and consumption habits, providing a detailed picture of household welfare.

It’s crucial to remember that the poverty line is an average, not a rigid boundary. As BPS notes, a household of five in Jakarta with a monthly income slightly above Rp4,230,425 might still struggle to meet all their needs, depending on factors like the age and health of family members.

Did you know? Poverty rates often vary significantly across regions within a country. Understanding these regional disparities is crucial for designing targeted poverty reduction programs.

Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction

Sustained economic growth is a key driver of poverty reduction. However, growth must be inclusive, benefiting all segments of society. Policies that promote job creation, improve access to education and healthcare, and strengthen social safety nets are essential for ensuring that the benefits of growth are widely shared.

Indonesia’s experience demonstrates the complex relationship between economic growth and poverty reduction. While the country has made significant progress in reducing poverty over the past two decades, challenges remain, particularly in rural areas and among vulnerable populations.

Navigating the Nuances of Poverty Data

Interpreting poverty data requires careful consideration of the underlying methodologies and assumptions. Both global and national poverty lines provide valuable insights, but they should not be viewed in isolation.

The key is to understand the strengths and limitations of each approach and to use the data to inform evidence-based policies that address the root causes of poverty. This includes investing in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, as well as promoting good governance and social inclusion.

FAQ: Understanding Poverty Metrics

What is the difference between the World Bank’s poverty line and a national poverty line?
The World Bank’s poverty line is a global standard used for cross-country comparisons, while national poverty lines are tailored to the specific needs and consumption patterns of a country’s population.
Why do poverty rates vary between different sources?
Poverty rates can vary due to differences in methodology, data sources, and the definition of poverty used.
How is the poverty line calculated in Indonesia?
BPS calculates the poverty line based on the “Cost of Basic Needs” approach, considering the minimum expenditure required to meet essential food and non-food needs.
What factors contribute to poverty?
Poverty is influenced by a complex interplay of factors, including economic growth, access to education and healthcare, social inequality, and environmental degradation.
How can poverty be reduced?
Poverty reduction requires a multifaceted approach that includes promoting inclusive economic growth, investing in human capital, strengthening social safety nets, and promoting good governance.

Hidden Swingers Club Exposed: Police Foil Sex Swapping Parties in Jakarta and Bali

In a significant bust, the Directorate of Cyber Crime Investigation (Ditressiber) of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya) has uncovered a case involving online-aided swinger parties held in both Jakarta and Bali. The activities, which involved the exchange of partners, were facilitated through a website.

"Our investigation revealed the distribution of electronic documents via a website containing invitations to sex parties and spouse swapping," explained Kombes Ade Ary Syam Indradi, the Head of Public Relations of Polda Metro Jaya, during a press briefing on Thursday (9/1).

The operation led to the arrest of a couple— a 39-year-old man with the initials IG and a 39-year-old woman with the initials KS— residents of Badung, Bali. The pair had been organizing and distributing invitations to the events, predominantly targeting residents of Bali and Jakarta.

The investigation revealed that the website in question, named "SWXXX.com," was used to host the invitations. Participants were allegedly recruited for free, with no monetary exchange involved. However, Indradi noted that the parties were not without profit—videos of the events were recorded secretly and sold without the consent of the participants.

Worryingly, authorities suspect that as many as 10 such events had already taken place—eight in Bali and two in Jakarta. The arrested couple is currently undergoing intense interrogation at the Cyber Crime Unit of Polda Metro Jaya.

The emerging details of this case serve as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking in the shadows of the internet. As technology continues to evolve, so too do the methods by which unscrupulous individuals exploit vulnerabilities for personal gain.

Gen Z’s Unorthodox Tactics Upend Elite Plans in Regional and Presidential Elections

by Chief Editor January 5, 2025
written by Chief Editor

Title: Gen-Z Students‘ Legal Activism Garners Praise for Safeguarding Inauguration: Who's Who?
”>Indonesian Democracy

In a significant turn of events, the legal activism of several students has earned widespread commendation for helping to prevent elitist political schemas in the upcoming 2024 regional elections and presidential election. These students, hailing from various universities and primarily belonging to Generation Z, have made history through their persistent pursuit of justice.

Dr. Titi Anggraini, a law lecturer at the University of Indonesia (UI) specializing in election law, has lauded the efforts of these students. Four students from UIN Sunan Kalijaga (Suka) Yogyakarta—Enika Maya Oktavia, Rizki Maulana Syafei, Faisal Nasirul Haq, and Tsalis Khoriul Fatna—filed a petition with the Constitutional Court (MK) challenging the presidential threshold, which was subsequently struck down as unconstitutional in a landmark decision (Nomor.62/PUU-XXII/2024).

Additionally, two UI students—.worked indirectly to prevent the acceleration of simultaneous regional elections in 2024, maintaining the original date of November 14, 2024. Moreover, a student from UIN Jakarta, A. Fahrur Rozi, successfully argued before the MK that the age requirement for regional heads should be based on the nomination stage, not the inauguration, as previously ruled by the Mahkamah Agung (MA).

These efforts, Dr. Anggraini noted, have not only shaped Indonesia’s legal landscape but also inspired hope for the future of the country’s democracy. "History is made by many of our Gen-Z, though not all get the spotlight. Our hope for Indonesia lies in them; we must protect and nurture their spirit."

Praise for these students also came from Anies Baswedan, former Governor of DKI Jakarta and presidential candidate in the last election. He lauded the students for "strengthening, not undermining, Indonesia’s democracy," adding that they offered "hope for Indonesia’s democratic future."

The Pusat Studi Hukum Konstitusi (PSHK) of the University of Islam Indonesia (UII) also heaped praise on the students and theMK for their courageous decision. Retno Widiastuti, a researcher at PSHK, commended the students for their "jihad konstitusional" and the MK for being the "guardian of the constitution and democracy."

Ex-MK Chief Jimly Asshiddiqie also welcomed the MK’s decision, hoping it would brighten the future of Indonesia’s democracy. "Finally, MK has abolished the 20% presidential threshold for the 2029 election. This is a New Year’s gift that brightens the future of our democracy."

These students’ efforts serve as a reminder of the crucial role young people play in shaping and safeguarding democracy. Their activism underscores the principle that every citizen has the power to influence and change the course of history. As the country looks towards the 2024 elections and beyond, the actions of these students serve as an inspiration for all Indonesians to actively participate in the democratic process.

Title: From Rivals to Friends: Anies and Ahok‘s New Year Surprise

SEO Keywords: Anies Baswedan, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, Ahok, Jakarta Gubernatorial Election, Political Reunion

Meta Description: Former Jakarta Governors Anies Baswedan and Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) surprised the public with their warm reunion during the New Year’s Eve celebration, hinting at a potential political alliance in 2025.

Article:

Jakarta – The first day of 2025 brought an unexpected yet delightful surprise for political enthusiasts in Jakarta. Former gubernatorial rivals, Anies Baswedan and Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok), displayed an unprecedented level of camaraderie during the New Year’s Eve celebration at the City Hall, leaving onlookers buzzing with speculation.

The once-bitter competitors in the 2017 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election were seen engaging in hushed conversations, with laughter and banter filling the air. The sight of Ahok and Anies, once locked in a fierce political battle, exchanging pleasantries and jokes was enough to make headlines. However, the cherry on top of this political sundae was their promise of a ‘big surprise’ in the coming year.

When asked about their secret whispers, Anies playfully hinted, "You’ll have to wait and see. We’ve got something special planned for 2025." Ahok, with a smile, echoed the sentiment, "Yes, it’s going to be worth the wait. Keep your eyes peeled."

Political analysts have been left scratching their heads, trying to decipher the meaning behind this sudden display of unity. Adi Prayitno, Director of the Indonesian Politics Research Center (PPI), believes that the common enemy, in this case, President Joko Widodo, might have brought them together. "Given their shared opposition to Jokowi in the 2024 presidential election, it’s not unreasonable to think that they might collaborate in the future," he speculated.

PDIP, the political party that supported Ahok in the 2017 election, welcomed the thawing of relations between the two former governors. "We’re optimistic about their reunion and hope it leads to a productive collaboration for the betterment of Jakarta," said Chico Hakim, PDIP’s spokesperson.

Anies’ spokesperson, Angga Putra Fidrian, remained tight-lipped about the nature of the surprise, only stating that the two have maintained regular contact and that their communication has been "quite warm."

While the specifics of their planned collaboration remain shrouded in mystery, one thing is clear: the political landscape of Jakarta is set to witness an intriguing shift in 2025. The question is, will this surprise be a game-changer, or will it fizzle out like a damp squib? Only time will tell.
