Indonesia Weather Update: What to Expect in Late April 2025

As we approach the final days of April 2025, residents of Indonesia should prepare for significant weather changes. The Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG) has identified a series of atmospheric phenomena likely to impact the region’s climate until April 10, 2025. These include the activation of the MJO Spatial, equatorial Rossby waves, Kelvin waves, and Low Frequency activities across the northern and eastern parts of Indonesia. Additionally, a cyclonic circulation has been monitored in the southern part of the Indian Ocean near Lampung, the waters off northwestern Aceh, the Natuna Sea, Southeast Indian Ocean near East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), and North Maluku.

Key Atmospheric Phenomena and Their Impacts

### MJO Spatial and Other Waves

The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is a critical factor influencing weather patterns across the globe, including Indonesia. When MJO phases are active, they can lead to increased convection, causing significant rainfall and sometimes severe weather events. For instance, during past MJO activities, regions in Southeast Asia experienced some of the most intense rainfall events of the year.

### Enhanced Convection Risks

Besides MJO, the Rossby and Kelvin waves play significant roles in shifting weather patterns over vast oceanic areas. These atmospheric currents can result in enhanced convective activities, sometimes leading to heavy rainfall or thunderstorms. For example, enhanced convection was responsible for severe flooding in parts of Sumatra and Kalimantan in 2020, highlighting the need for timely preparedness.

Regional Weather Prospects and Precautionary Measures

### Prepare for Heavy Rains

Regions such as West Sumatra, East Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, Central Papua, and South Papua are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. Communities in these areas should take preventive measures such as ensuring proper drainage systems and securing loose objects that could be blown away by strong winds.

### Wind Advisory for Nusa Tenggara Timur

Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) is set to face strong winds, potentially disrupting daily activities and posing hazards to those in coastal areas. It’s crucial for residents in these areas to secure outdoor structures and be mindful of weather updates.

Community Preparedness Strategies

Communities are advised to stay vigilant by monitoring weather updates from BMKG and other meteorological services. Stockpiling essentials such as food, water, and medical supplies can be a lifesaver in the event of unforeseen circumstances. Creating an emergency plan and keeping families informed about safe evacuation routes is another vital step.

BMKG Alerts Public to Potential Extreme Weather in Several Regions Due to Tropical Cyclone Potential 97S and Asian Monsoon

The Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG) has been monitoring the development of Tropical Cyclone Potential 97S and the Asian Monsoon, which has been strengthening. BMKG has warned the public to be vigilant against potential extreme weather conditions in several areas over the next few days.

As per BMKG’s official statement, their Tropical Cyclone Warning Center (TCWC) in Jakarta has been tracking a low-pressure system in southern Nusa Tenggara since January 3, 2025. This system moved towards the west-northwest and developed into Tropical Cyclone Potential 97S on January 7, 2025, in the southern Java Sea, south of East Timor.

BMKG’s latest analysis on January 9, 2025, indicates that the system’s intensity has increased, and it is currently detected in the southern Lampung Sea, moving south. Tropical Cyclone Potential 97S is expected to impact weather conditions in several Indonesian regions within the next three days.

Tropical Cyclone Potential 97S may indirectly affect some regions with increased rainfall and strong winds. Directly, it could cause high waves in southern Indonesian waters within the next three days.

Potential Moderate to Heavy Rain

BMKG reports that Tropical Cyclone Potential 97S may enhance the potential for moderate to heavy rain, accompanied by gusty winds, in several regions:

  • Bengkulu
  • South Sumatra
  • Lampung
  • Banten
  • Jakarta
  • West Java
  • Central Java

Potential High Waves (1.25-2.5 m)

Moreover, BMKG warns that Tropical Cyclone Potential 97S may cause waves up to 1.25 to 2.5 meters high in the following areas:

  • Southern Java and NTB waters
  • Western and southern Sunda Strait
  • South Java and NTB southern Indian Ocean
  • West Bengkulu to Lampung Indian Ocean

"From our calculations, this tropical cyclone is likely to have a significant impact within the next three days, mainly in the form of increased rainfall intensity, gusty winds, and high waves in certain areas," said Guswanto, Deputy Head of Meteorology, on Thursday (January 9, 2025).

Meanwhile, Andri Ramdhani, Director of Meteorological Services, noted that increased rainfall in the coming week is not solely due to Tropical Cyclone Potential 97S but also influenced by favorable atmospheric conditions and Asian monsoon and cold surge activities.

"Monsoon and cold surges from Asia also contribute to increased rainfall in western Indonesian regions," Andri explained. He added that the established cyclone circulation over the past few days around Nusatenggara has also affected Indonesia’s atmospheric dynamics. The persistent Rossby Equatorial Wave and Kelvin Wave activities in the next week, particularly affecting Sumatra, Java, parts of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua, further amplifies this condition.

With the potential for significant weather conditions, Andri urges the public to be cautious about potential heavy rain and thunderstorms, including possible flooding, flash floods, landslides, and slippery roads that may threaten safety.

Headline: Extreme Weather Increasing: BMKG Warns of Heavy Rain and Gusty Winds Across Indonesia

Subhead: Prepare for potential disasters as suspect areas and cyclonic circulations brew

Meta Title: Extreme Weather in Indonesia: BMKG Issues Heavy Rain Advisory

Meta Description: BMKG warns of increasing extreme weather events in Indonesia, with heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flooding.

Article:

Heavy rain with the potential for flooding and strong winds is expected in several parts of Indonesia in the coming days, according to the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The weather bureau attributes this to suspect areas and cyclonic circulations developing in the region.

In an official statement, BMKG revealed that there’s a heightened possibility of thunderstorms and heavy rain, gusty winds, and lightning in several regions. This is due to the presence of suspect areas in the Indian Ocean south of Bali and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), and cyclonic circulations in the Indian Ocean west of Aceh, the Philippines Sea, and the Banda Sea.

BMKG explained that these suspect areas and cyclonic circulations create regions of slow wind speeds (convergence) and wind meeting points (confluence), leading to extreme weather conditions in various parts of Indonesia. Additionally, active atmospheric dynamics such as the ongoing weak La Niña phenomenon and Asian monsoon winds are contributing to this prognosis.

"Expect significant rain in the foreseeable future, particularly in western and eastern regions," BMKG warned on Thursday (9/1/2025). "The increased rain potential in some areas could lead to hydro-meteorological disasters like floods, landslides, and strong winds."

Extreme Weather Conditions Escalating

In a separate statement, BMKG Deputy Head for Meteorology Guswanto disclosed that Tropical Cyclone Warning Center (TCWC) Jakarta has been monitoring a low-pressure system since January 3, 2025, which started moving westward and intensified into Tropical Depression 97S off East java’s southern coast on January 7.

"Based on the latest analysis on January 9, 2025, 97S has strengthened and is now detected in the Indian Ocean’s southern Lampung region, moving south," Guswanto said. "This tropical depression is anticipated to cause indirect impacts like increased rain and gusty winds, as well as direct impacts like high waves in southern and southeastern Indonesian waters in the next three days."

Tropical Depression 97S is expected to amplify the potential for moderate to heavy rain, accompanied by gusty winds, in multiple regions, including Bengkulu, South Sumatra, Lampung, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, and Central Java. Additionally, wave heights ranging from 1.25 to 2.5 meters are predicted in Java’s southern seas, the Sundra Strait’s western and southern regions, the Indian Ocean’s southern Java to NTB, and the Indian Ocean’s west Bengkulu to Lampung.

Guswanto emphasized the necessity of anticipating these weather conditions, especially in coastal and southern Indonesian regions, as extreme weather can disrupt marine activities and affect coastal communities.

Preparing for Extreme Weather Events

BMKG urges residents to:

  • Anticipate hydro-meteorological disaster risks, particularly in prone areas
  • Clean drains and surroundings to minimize flood risks
  • Avoid activities in prone areas and prepare emergency kits
  • Monitor up-to-date weather information through official BMKG channels
  • Stay calm and vigilant regarding changes in weather conditions and understand evacuation procedures if necessary

BMKG assures citizens that they will continue to monitor and update the weather situation.
