Lombok is experiencing a significant surge in traveler demand throughout 2026. The island’s proximity to Bali, accessible via short speedy boat crossings, has led many holidaymakers to extend their itineraries to include several days in Lombok.
Expanding the “Five New Balis”
The Indonesian government has identified five “Super Priority Destinations” nationally, with Mandalika in Lombok serving as one of these key sites. These destinations are often referred to as the “five new Balis.”
There are official hopes that these travel hotspots could eventually become as established and in demand as Bali. However, achieving this level of operation requires significant improvements in transportation and accessibility.
New Strategic Maritime Connections
To boost foreign tourist arrivals via Bali, the West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Provincial Government has confirmed the opening of a year-round fast boat route between Mandalika and Sanur.

This service will connect the Mandalika Pier, located within the Mandalika Special Economic Zone (KEK), to the pier in the Sanur Special Economic Zone (KEK). The permitting process for this operation has been submitted to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
Demand for this service is expected to skyrocket during the Mandalika Moto GP, which is scheduled to take place from October 9 to 11, 2026. Leaders are currently working to build upon the successes of previous years to prepare for the event.
Enhancing Regional Accessibility
Ervan Anwar, Head of the NTB Transportation Agency, has emphasized that connectivity must be strengthened across land, sea, and air. He noted that the government is encouraging transportation integration through subsidy schemes to maintain affordability for public transport.
Beyond Mandalika, the government is as well opening a new pier and fast boat routes at Senggigi Harbour. Although Senggigi does not hold Special Economic Zone status, it remains a key area for tourism development.
Yeyen Heryawan, General Manager of Aruna Senggigi Resort & Convention, stated that the new port will allow tourists to travel more directly to beach resorts. He noted that guests traveling to Bali will no longer need to go to Bangsal, as the direct route from Senggigi is closer and more affordable.
These new routes will complement existing services from Bali to West Nusa Tenggara, which currently operate from Padang Bai to Gili Trawangan, Senggigi, and Bangsal, as well as from Sanur to Gili Trawangan and Senggigi.
