Meta Quest VR Headset Users to Lose Access to Horizon Worlds, Legs and All

by Chief Editor March 18, 2026
written by Chief Editor

The Metaverse Retreats: Horizon Worlds Shifts to Mobile, Signaling a VR Crossroads

Meta’s Horizon Worlds, once touted as a cornerstone of the metaverse, is undergoing a significant transformation. The platform will soon become mobile-only, marking a retreat from VR headsets and raising questions about the future of immersive virtual experiences. This shift, announced in a Meta Community Forums update, comes after years of development and substantial investment, and reflects the challenges of achieving widespread adoption in virtual reality.

A Bumpy Ride for Meta’s ‘Verse

The journey of Horizon Worlds has been anything but smooth. From Mark Zuckerberg’s somewhat awkward avatar reveal in 2022 – a low-poly digital representation that quickly became a meme – to the much-hyped addition of legs for avatars, the platform has faced consistent hurdles. While legs addressed a common complaint about the initial, static nature of avatars, they didn’t solve the fundamental problem of comfortable and intuitive locomotion in VR. Engineers have explored solutions ranging from “giant hamster wheels” to expensive, moving floor tiles, but a truly satisfying VR walking experience remains elusive.

Users hoping to experience Horizon Worlds on a headset have until March 31, 2026, to download the app from the Quest Store. Those who already have it installed can continue using it until June 15, 2026, before it is officially sunsetted. After that, the experience will be confined to mobile devices.

What Does This Imply for the Future of VR?

The move to mobile-only isn’t necessarily a death knell for Horizon Worlds, but it does signal a recalibration of Meta’s strategy. Separating the VR and mobile platforms allows each to develop with greater focus, according to Meta. However, it also suggests that the company is acknowledging the current limitations of VR adoption. The broader implications for the VR industry are significant.

Several factors contribute to the challenges facing VR. Cost remains a barrier for many consumers, with high-complete headsets requiring a substantial investment. Comfort and usability are also concerns, as some users experience motion sickness or find headsets cumbersome to wear for extended periods. Perhaps most importantly, a compelling “killer app” – a must-have experience that drives mass adoption – has yet to emerge.

The Rise of Mobile VR and Spatial Computing

While dedicated VR headsets may be facing headwinds, mobile VR and augmented reality (AR) are gaining traction. The accessibility of smartphones makes mobile VR a more appealing option for many users. The emergence of spatial computing devices, like the Apple Vision Pro, represents a new approach to immersive experiences. These devices blend AR and VR, offering a more versatile and potentially more user-friendly experience.

The shift towards mobile and spatial computing could reshape the metaverse landscape. Instead of being confined to dedicated headsets, virtual experiences may become more integrated into our everyday lives, accessible through the devices we already carry with us.

Impact on Meta Horizon Plus Subscribers

The changes also affect Meta Horizon Plus (MH+) subscribers. Horizon-specific perks, including Meta Credits, Digital Clothing, and Avatars, will be removed from the subscription by March 31, 2026. However, core MH+ gaming benefits and monthly games will remain unaffected.

FAQ

Q: When will Horizon Worlds no longer be available on VR headsets?
A: Horizon Worlds will be removed from the Quest Store on March 31, 2026, and the app will be sunsetted on June 15, 2026.

Q: Will Horizon Worlds still be available after June 15, 2026?
A: Yes, but only as a mobile-only experience.

Q: What will happen to my Meta Horizon Plus subscription?
A: Horizon-specific perks will be removed, but core gaming benefits and monthly games will continue.

Q: Does this mean the metaverse is dead?
A: Not necessarily. It suggests a shift in focus and a recognition of the challenges in achieving widespread VR adoption. The metaverse concept may evolve and find new forms, particularly through mobile and spatial computing.

Did you know? The initial release of Horizon Worlds in France and Spain was accompanied by a now-infamous image of Mark Zuckerberg’s avatar, widely criticized for its simplistic and unsettling appearance.

Pro Tip: If you’re interested in exploring VR, consider starting with mobile VR options, which are generally more affordable and accessible than dedicated headsets.

written by Chief Editor

Virtual Boy‘s Second Act: Retro Gaming Finds New Life in VR

Remember the Virtual Boy? Nintendo’s infamous 3D gaming console from the mid-90s, known for its red-and-black display and the headaches it induced? While a commercial flop at the time, the Virtual Boy is now experiencing a surprising resurgence, thanks to the intersection of retro gaming and virtual reality (VR).

From Failure to Cult Classic: A Virtual Boy Refresher

The original Virtual Boy faced several hurdles. Its high price, clunky design, and the eye-straining display contributed to its downfall. Fewer than a million units were sold. But, like a phoenix from the ashes, the Virtual Boy is finding new life. Nintendo’s recent announcement of a Virtual Boy comeback as a Switch accessory sparked renewed interest.

Did you know? The Virtual Boy was conceived by the same designer who created the Game Boy, Gunpei Yokoi. Its failure was a major blow, leading to Yokoi’s departure from Nintendo.

VR Emulators: A Gateway to the Virtual Boy’s Past

Enthusiasts aren’t waiting for Nintendo alone. VR emulators like “VirtualBoyGo” are making it possible to experience Virtual Boy games on modern VR headsets, such as the Meta Quest 3. This opens up a whole new audience to the cult classic’s unique 3D gameplay.

We tested the emulator and were pleasantly surprised. Games like “Mario Clash” and “Red Alarm” have a fresh appeal when experienced in the immersive environment of VR. The virtual screens are large, crisp, and true to the original red-and-black aesthetic.

Exploring the Virtual Boy’s Game Library in VR

The Virtual Boy’s library may be small, but it contains some genuinely innovative games. Many games use the 3D effect in creative ways. Classic side-scrollers like “Virtual Boy Wario Land” and “Vertical Force” saw Wario and space ships appear in different depths of play. “Mario’s Tennis” uses the 3D to make the ball move in space. Games with first-person perspectives are especially interesting, as it makes the experience even more immersive.

Pro Tip: Some emulators allow for color adjustments. While the original red-and-black is iconic, some find it easier on the eyes to change the color palette. For games like “Golf”, a color shift can make it easier to enjoy the game.

The Promise of a Virtual Boy Comeback

Nintendo’s approach to the Virtual Boy’s return has people curious. By using the Switch’s processing power and display, the new iteration aims to avoid the issues of the original. However, whether the new design will be comfortable or not remains to be seen.

A cardboard version to insert the Switch into is also rumored. This could make the virtual experience more accessible, but it comes with the risk of sacrificing image quality.

The success of the Virtual Boy’s return hinges on Nintendo’s execution. If they can successfully marry the retro charm of the Virtual Boy with a comfortable and enjoyable VR experience, they might finally unlock its true potential.

  1. Symptome wie bei Trunkenheit: Forscher untersuchen Effekte von Mixed Reality

close notice

Mixed-Reality-Headsets verschlechtern die menschliche Sicht also deutlich.

by Chief Editor August 23, 2025
written by Chief Editor

  1. Meta’s VR Platform and Sideloading: A Look at the Future

Meta’s recent actions regarding its VR platform and sideloading capabilities highlight a critical juncture in the evolution of virtual reality. Removing the “VR Android File Manager” from the Horizon Store—a tool allowing users to install Android applications from outside the official store—underscores the company’s strategy to maintain control over its ecosystem. But what does this mean for the future of VR, and how will sideloading impact user experience and the broader VR landscape?

The Tightening Grip: Why Meta is Restricting Sideloading

Meta’s decision to remove the file manager app wasn’t arbitrary. It’s part of a broader effort to curate the user experience, ensure platform integrity, and, importantly, protect its revenue streams. Restricting sideloading isn’t just about control; it’s about safeguarding the 30% cut Meta takes from all app sales within its store.

Another significant factor is security. Unvetted apps from unknown sources pose a risk. Malware and malicious software can be disguised as seemingly harmless applications, potentially compromising user data and device security. By controlling the app distribution process, Meta aims to mitigate these risks.

Consider this: The “VR Android File Manager” allowed users to bypass these restrictions, installing apps without oversight. While convenient, it undermined Meta’s control, security measures, and revenue model.

The Sideloading Paradox: Convenience vs. Control

Sideloading itself isn’t inherently “bad.” On standard Android devices, it’s a well-established feature. The core issue is how Meta implements and restricts this functionality on its Horizon OS. The current process, requiring a developer account, the developer mode, and a USB-C connection, is cumbersome. This complexity drives users towards the official store, a calculated design choice.

Contrast this with the ease of sideloading on Android phones, where users simply enable “install from unknown sources” in settings. This disparity highlights Meta’s strategy of balancing user convenience with platform control.

Pro Tip: If you’re determined to sideload on your Meta Quest, consider using “SideQuest.” It simplifies the process by handling the technical complexities, but you still need to activate developer mode.

VR Ecosystems: A Comparative View

Meta’s approach to sideloading places it in a unique position when compared to other major tech players. Apple’s iOS, for instance, is far more restrictive. Apple has tightly controlled the app ecosystem. Sideloading, while mandated in the EU due to regulations like the Digital Markets Act, remains heavily guarded, making it less user-friendly.

On the other end of the spectrum, you find platforms built on open-source operating systems like Android, where sideloading is commonplace. Companies like Pico, also in the VR market, have adopted a more open stance towards sideloading.

The landscape is changing. The EU’s push for open ecosystems and consumer choice puts pressure on companies like Meta to adapt. The future likely involves a more nuanced approach, balancing user freedom with platform security and revenue.

The Influence of Google and Android XR

Google’s influence is crucial. As it pushes forward with its Android XR platform, the approach Google takes towards sideloading will significantly shape the VR landscape. If Google embraces easy sideloading, it could drive innovation and user adoption. If Meta wants to compete, it may need to re-evaluate its current strategy.

Consider the potential impact: A more open Android XR could attract developers and users. Meta might face a choice: either embrace a more open approach to maintain competitiveness or risk being seen as restrictive in a more open market.

Financial Incentives and Platform Control

The financial implications are substantial. Meta’s control over its store is a key revenue driver. It takes a 30% cut of all app sales. Allowing easy sideloading undermines this model, and this explains the firm’s current stance.

However, there is a counterargument. A more open platform could, in theory, attract more developers. Increased development could lead to better apps, and a more robust platform that ultimately enhances Meta’s VR ecosystem and drives hardware sales, despite the potential revenue loss from the store.

Future Trends and Predictions

Looking ahead, several trends are likely to emerge:

  • Increased Pressure for Openness: The EU and other regulators will continue to push for greater consumer choice.
  • Evolving Sideloading Tools: Developers will find innovative ways to make sideloading easier, regardless of Meta’s restrictions.
  • Security as a Priority: Meta will need to balance user convenience with enhanced security measures to protect its platform.
  • Platform Competition: The competition between different VR platforms will increase, potentially leading to more diverse approaches to sideloading.

The future of VR sideloading hinges on this balance. Meta faces a challenge: How can it balance revenue, security, and user experience? The answers will shape the future of virtual reality.
