Air Force urges people to report flying objects as Spring Storm 2026 kicks off | News

Starting May 18, air threat alerts will be tested via the “Ole valmis!” mobile application as part of the Spring Storm 2026 exercise. The Air Force is calling on the public to utilize the app to report any aircraft sightings.

Integrating Public Observation into National Defense

The “Ole valmis!” (which translates to “Be Prepared!”) app was developed by the Women’s Voluntary Defense Organization. The platform is designed to allow users to quickly report the presence of various aircraft in the sky, including helicopters, airplanes and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Air Force Chief of Staff Col. Fredi Karu emphasized the strategic value of this public integration, stating: “Every citizen’s quick and accurate observation submitted through the ‘Ole valmis!’ app provides the Air Force with invaluable early warning information that helps us identify and respond to potential air threats even faster than before. This feature creates a direct link between the population and national defense personnel, turning every resident of Estonia into the eyes and ears helping safeguard the security of our shared airspace.”

Exercise Timeline and Focus Areas

The air threat reporting functionality will be active from May 18 through May 24. This window coincides with the period when the Spring Storm exercise is expected to reach its most intensive level of air activity.

While sightings can be reported from any location within Estonia, the Defense Forces are specifically encouraging reports from South Estonia, as it serves as the primary area for the Spring Storm exercise. Despite the public’s role in reporting, the Air Force retains sole responsibility for identifying aircraft and determining the appropriate response.

How to Access the Reporting Tool

The EDF is seeking active participation from the public to help build a stronger national defense. Users can access the feature through the following methods:

  • Automatic Updates: Users who already have the app installed with automatic software updates enabled will receive the reporting feature automatically on May 18.
  • Manual Updates: Those without automatic updates must manually update the app or download it starting May 18.
  • Downloads: The app is available via the App Store and Google Play.

Significance and Potential Implications

The use of the “Ole valmis!” app during Spring Storm 2026 represents a shift toward a more crowdsourced approach to airspace monitoring. By creating a direct link between civilians and defense personnel, the military may be able to decrease response times to unidentified aerial activity.

Looking forward, the results of this testing period could influence how the EDF incorporates mobile technology into future national security strategies. If the exercise proves successful, such public-integrated reporting systems may become a more permanent fixture in safeguarding shared airspace.
