United States Sanctions Chinese Firm Linked to ‘FaxHeat’ Cybercrime Group

US Targets Chinese Firm Over Reported Hacking Ties

The US Treasury Department has slapped fresh cybersecurity sanctions on Integrity Technology Group, a Chinese software firm, over allegations that it played a key role in multiple hacking incidents targeting US critical infrastructure since 2021.

Based in Beijing, Integrity Technology Group has previously been accused by Western officials of being behind an important Chinese hacking group known as "Flax Typhoon". In 2021, then-FBI Director Christopher Wray claimed that while the company posed as a tech firm, it also gathered intelligence and conducted recon for Chinese government security agencies. Chinese officials at the time dismiss the claims as "unjustified" and "baseless."

The latest sanctions, announced this Friday, come just days after the Biden administration revealed that Chinese hackers had remotely accessed several workstations and unclassified documents at the US Treasury Department.

According to the Treasury, the hackers exploited a stolen key used by the software provider, BeyondTrust, to secure its cloud-based service. However, these sanctions do not appear to be directly related to the December 8th hack.

Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department, said Integrity Tech was a major contractor for the Chinese government’s Ministry of State Security. He added that hackers linked to the company, known as "Flax Typhoon" in private sector, were working under Chinese government direction, targeting critical infrastructures in the US and abroad.

The US Treasury’s Under Secretary, Bradley Smith, stated that the US would dismantle cyber threats while working collaboratively to bolster public and private sector cyberdefenses. He also warned that the Treasury would hold cybercriminals and their facilitators accountable.

The sanctions block access to US properties and bank accounts, and prohibit those sanctioned from doing business with Americans. The US continues to grapple with the fallout from Operation Salt Typhoon, a massive Chinese cyberespionage campaign that gave Beijing access to private text messages and phone conversations of numerous unnamed Americans.

Title: Edmundo González Urrutia Continues His Latin American Tour with Stops in Uruguay and Argentina

Meta Description: Venezuela‘s president-elect, Edmundo González Urrutia, embarks on a Latin American tour to strengthen support against Nicolás Maduro‘s fraud, with stops in Panama, Uruguay, and Argentina.

Article:

Buckle up for a rollercoaster ride through Venezuela’s political landscape as President-elect Edmundo González Urrutia continues his Latin American tour, mere weeks away from his scheduled inauguration on January 10.

The Venezuelan people and the international community have their eyes fixed on the country, where tensions are running high as the Maduro regime clings to power. Amid this tense environment, Edmundo González Urrutia is traversing the region, rallying support and solidifying international backing against the fraudulent Maduro government.

Panama and República Dominicana: A Tale of Two Stops

Kicking off his Latin American tour, González Urrutia will touch down in Panama on January 8, where he will meet with President José Raúl Mulino. The 24-hour visit will also include a gathering with the local Venezuelan community, accompanied by nine former heads of state, part of the Initiative for the Democratic House in the Americas, who have vocally opposed Maduro’s regime and championed the freedom of the Venezuelan people.

The next leg of his journey takes González Urrutia to República Dominicana, where he will hold talks with President Luis Abinader. This stop occurs just before his planned inauguration in Caracas, highlighting the growing international recognition and support for his presidency.

Argentina and Uruguay: Showcasing Regional Solidarity

Before his upcoming visits to Panama and República Dominicana, González Urrutia will make stops in Argentina and Uruguay to shore up support among regional allies.

On Saturday, January 3, González Urrutia will arrive in Argentina, where he will meet with President Javier Milei at the Casa Rosada. This visit underscores Argentina’s commitment to freedom, democracy, and human rights, with the goal of consolidating international backing for Venezuela’s democratic transition.

Post-meeting, Venezuelans in Argentina are expected to gather to welcome their president-elect and reiterate Venezuela’s commitment to being a free and democratic nation.

Later that day, González Urrutia will travel to Uruguay, where he will be received by President Luis Lacalle Pou and Minister of Foreign Affairs Omar Paganini. Once again, members of Uruguay’s Venezuelan community will congregate to support the president-elect and express their aspirations for a democratic Venezuela.

Maduro’s Regime: A Desperate Gamble

As González Urrutia charts his Latin American tour, the Maduro regime escalates its desperate attempts to cling to power by offering a USD 100,000 reward for information leading to the president-elect’s detention. The charges against González Urrutia include conspiracy, inciting violence, usurpation of powers, and more. The opposition has long warned of the risks accompanying González Urrutia’s return to Venezuela, with the Maduro regime leaving no stone unturned in its quest to maintain control.

As January 10 looms on the horizon, the world watches and waits to see how Venezuela’s political drama will unfold. The outcome will undoubtedly shape the region’s geopolitical landscape for years to come.

Trump Announces New Ambassador to Panama, Reiterates Criticism of Canal’s Governance

Title: Trump Announces New Ambassador to Panama and Reiterates Canal Control Demands

Meta Description: Donald Trump announces his next ambassador to Panama while restating his demands for control of the strategic Panama Canal, sparking tension with Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino.

With less than two months remaining in office, former U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated Kevin Mariano Cabrera as the new American ambassador to Panama. As reported by EFE, Trump announced the nomination on Wednesday via his Truth Social profile, praising Cabrera as a "fierce fighter for the principles of ‘America First’" and a key figure in driving "economic growth and the promotion of international alliances". In his new role, Cabrera will be responsible for spearheading diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Panama, with a particular focus on addressing the "ongoing theft" of the strategically vital Panama Canal by the Panamanian government.

Trump’s announcement comes amidst increasing tensions between the U.S. and Panama over the control and management of the Panama Canal. Over the weekend, Trump sparked controversy by accusing Panama of "treating us unjustly and imprudently" in relation to the waterway, and threatened to "take it back" due to "ridiculous" tariffs imposed on U.S. ships and companies. The former president further contended that Panama’s mismanagement of the Canal places the interests of U.S. at risk, giving an unfair advantage to competitors such as China, which has gained significant influence in the region.

"When President Jimmy Carter foolishly gave it away, for a dollar, during his time in office, only Panama administered it – not China or anyone else. Not even Panama was allowed to charge excessive fees to the U.S., its navy, and corporations operating within our borders," Trump elaborated in a series of posts on his social media platform. "It was not given away as a gift for others’ benefit, but simply as a sign of our cooperation with Panama, and both countries’"

Trump’s latest remarks escalate the ongoing dispute surrounding the Panama Canal, which dates back to 1914 when the U.S. constructed and later managed the waterway until its handover to Panamanian control on January 1, 2000. In response to Trump’s threats, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino swiftly dismissed the former president’s claims, asserting that "each square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjoining areas belongs to Panama, and always will". Mulino further explained that "tariffs are not a whim; rather, they are determined according to the Canal’s technical council’s recommendations and are essential for maintaining the infrastructure and ensuring the Canal’s economic sustainability" – a sentiment that fell on deaf ears as Trump persisted in his demands.

As the U.S. prepares for a new administration under President-elect Joe Biden, the future of the Panama Canal and the relationship between the two nations remains uncertain. With Trump’s latest appointment and continuing assertions regarding Canal control, the stage is set for a tense period of international diplomacy as the U.S. seeks to protect its interests in the face of a shifting global landscape.

Chavista National Assembly to Propose Punishment for Opposition for “Requesting Use of National Funds”

Former Venezuelan Opposition Lawmakers Accused of Asking U.S. to Access Citgo Funds

CARACAS, Venezuela — The Venezuelan National Assembly (AN) has accused a group of former opposition lawmakers from the 2015 legislature of requesting access to funds belonging to Citgo, the U.S.-based subsidiary of Venezuela’s state-owned oil company PDVSA. The AN is now seeking the application of the "Libertador Simón Bolívar" law against them, which carries penalties of up to 30 years in prison and a 60-year political ban.

During a commission meeting, AN President Jorge Rodríguez presented a letter purportedly sent by former deputy Francisco Piaza to U.S. diplomat Francisco Palmieri. In the letter, Piaza and other former lawmakers reportedly ask Palmieri to allow them to access the dividends and other assets of Citgo, which are currently frozen in the United States due to U.S. sanctions against Venezuela.

Rodríguez accused the former lawmakers of committing a crime under the "Libertador Simón Bolívar" law against the U.S. blockade. "They are asking a foreign government official to use funds that belong to the Venezuelan people, to illegally and illegitimately manage frozen accounts abroad," Rodríguez said.

The AN president argued that the funds would be used to finance conspiracies against Venezuela and enrich the former lawmakers. Rodríguez also announced that the AN will request the application of the "Extinction of Domain" law to recover these assets.

Following the meeting, Rodríguez called for the immediate prosecution of former deputies Dinorah Figuera, Marianela Fernández, and Auristelia Vásquez, and demanded an investigation into a secret meeting allegedly held with the U.S. diplomat.

The "Libertador Simón Bolívar" law, approved unanimously last November, also imposes fines of up to one million euros (approximately $1.06 million) on individuals involved in promoting or implementing foreign sanctions against Venezuela.

The contentious political and economic landscape of Venezuela continues to evolve, with new revelations and accusations emerging in the struggle between the Maduro administration and the opposition. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

It’s Not Just Allegations Anymore: Rep. Matt Gaetz’s History of Paying for Sex, Including an Underage Girl, According to U.S. House Report

by Chief Editor December 23, 2024
written by Chief Editor

Ex-Rep. Matt Gaetz Withdrew from Trump’s AG Race Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations

A damning report from the House Ethics Committee has concluded that former Rep. Matt Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct while serving in Congress, paying women for sex, including a minor, between 2017 and 2020. The 37-page document, released on Monday, alleges that Gaetz violated numerous rules and laws, including those prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, drug use, and obstruction of Congress.

Gaetz, one of Washington’s most Contentious politicians, has consistently denied these accusations. He resigned from his congressional seat just days before Trump’s endorsement and attempted to halt the report’s publication, arguing that the committee lacked jurisdiction over former members. However, a bipartisan vote, including at least one Republican, overrode this objection.

The report is the culmination of a nearly five-year bipartisan investigation, featuring testimony from dozens of witnesses and reviewing thousands of documents. It details Gaetz’s interactions with several women, including invitations to events, trips to the Bahamas, and parties. However, the committee found insufficient evidence to support the most serious allegation: violating federal sex trafficking laws.

Gaetz’s ties to Joel Greenberg, a Florida tax collector, are also examined. The two met in 2017 and frequently attended parties together, where Greenberg introduced Gaetz to young women he had met on SeekingArrangement.com, a website that facilitates "mutually beneficial relationships." Greenberg was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2022 for various crimes, including sex trafficking of a minor.

Gaetz’s future remains uncertain. While such allegations would have likely ended an earlier career, the current political landscape and the influence of the "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) movement make predicting his fate difficult. Over the weekend, Gaetz hinted at a potential Senate run in Florida following Marco Rubio’s departure to serve as Secretary of State.

U.S. to Designate Mexican Narco Cartels as Terrorist Organizations

by Chief Editor December 22, 2024
written by Chief Editor

Hed: Trump Vows Harsh Measures on Immigration, Narcotics, and Borders in First Day in Oval Office

In a combative speech addressed to a fervent crowd at a conference hosted by ultraconservative nonprofit Turning Point USA in Phoenix, Arizona, President-elect Donald Trump painted a grim picture of the US’ immigration woes, vowing to prioritize border security and crack down on drug cartels on his first day in the Oval Office.

Trump, who is set to assume command of the world’s foremost superpower on January 20, emphasized, "All foreign gang members will be expelled, and I will immediately designate the cartels [of drug trafficking] as foreign terrorist groups. I will do it right away." The former president stated this after speaking of unleashing the full power of federal security forces—including ICE, Border Patrol, the DEA, and intelligence agencies—to deport, dismantle, and destroy illegal migrant criminal networks operating within the United States.

This isn’t the first time the incoming president has used apocalyptic rhetoric to justify his hardline stance against drug trafficking and immigration policies. This time, he mentioned Aurora, a city in Colorado, that he used as an example of the supposed decline of US public safety during President Joe Biden’s tenure. Trump suggested that Aurora was now under the control of the Venezuelan criminal gang Tren de Aragua.

In addition to his usual bravado, Trump surprised observers by announcing the launch of an awareness campaign against drugs. "They ruin your appearance, damage your skin, and your teeth", he asserted, without providing specific details on the campaign’s scope, cost, or implementation. Although he promised that his administration would spend "a lot of money" on it, he later clarified that this would not be "that much, comparatively."

Trump’s latest declarations echo the atmosphere of the war against drugs launched by President Richard Nixon in the 1970s, which reached its highest point of intensity in the 1980s and 1990s, marked by slogans like Nancy Reagan’s "Just say no."

Trump also voiced his concerns about Mexico, following a recent call with President Claudia Sheinbaum. He praised her as a "wonderful woman" while expressing discontent over the fentanyl issue at the US-Mexico border, which accounted for around 70,000 overdose deaths in 2023. "We’re going to stop it," the president declared. "We will not allow that."

It remains uncertain whether Sheinbaum will alter the ongoing discussion on fentanyl with the United States, as her predecessor had initially denied its production in Mexico. The US has continued insisting that demand reduction is the core of the problem.

Throughout his speech, Trump touched on multiple topics, including the recent near-shutdown of the US Government and the alleged influence of tech mogul Elon Musk on US political affairs. Speaking at a rally-like event, Trump refuted suggestions of stepping down to make way for Musk, emphasizing that the Constitution requires a US-born citizen for presidential candidacy.

Lastly, Trump waded into an otherwise dormant debate: the Panama Canal. Warning against excessive tolls and the possibility of ‘wrong hands’ controlling the crucial infrastructure, he hinted at potential Chinese influence, although China neither controls nor manages the canal.

As the 45th President of the United States prepares for his return to the White House, the nation braces for his bold new initiatives that are set to significantly shape the country’s future.
